Game Notes

Recovering from a tough 10-8 loss to #2 Florida on Tuesday, the Owls move back to their true home at FAU baseball Stadium. Roger Dean is a solid alternate when needed for the likes of the Gators, but unwanted sprinkler activity in the middle of a contest should be effectively eliminated.

It may seem like Florida Atlantic is making more defensive mistakes than in recent times, although a quick look at the numbers reveals that their 11 errors in 2015 places them on track to match last season's total output if 71.

But after splitting against Top 10 competition thus far, Head Coach John McCormack is pleased with his squad.

"They play tough, they compete", McCormack said during an interview with Cyrus Smith on Wednesday. "We're proud of what we've accomplished so far…we're in a good position right now."

At the plate, Tallahassee CC transfer outfielder Christian Dicks (photo above) is the lone warrior to have hit a long ball on the year, and is also touting solo status in cycle activity while adding a double, and the squad's only triple to his resume.

"Christian has got off to a really nice start, he had a great game in Jupiter…which is going to earn him some more playing time", commented McCormack.

After dropping last season's series opener to Monmouth, FAU is likely glad to see former Hawk ace Andrew McGee depart. The lefty saw only 30 Owls in a complete game effort, while allowing just four hits. FAU's lone run was unearned.

Out of current Florida Atlantic players, Brendon Sanger had the best showing against the northeast foe, which was highlighted by a .417 average that included five total hits and one going for extra bases. The junior LF also drove in and scored a pair of runs.

Fast forward to this year, and things are certainly different for Monmouth (0-3), who lost three to Dallas Baptist (1-15, 1-6, 2-7) during their opening weekend back on February 13th. Bats were quiet, as the Hawks tallied just four runs for the entire weekend.

They may have some relief promise on the mound  in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week RHP Matt Littrell, who struck out three of his six batters faced in Sunday's loss, including the opposition's 2-3-4 portion of the line-up. And despite a rough 5th inning on Saturday, Chris McKenna is still being looked towards as the consistent series opener for the Hawks.

Offense may present a challenge however, where the team is a combined .165 through three games, with only one extra base hit.

They were rained out last weekend against James Madison, and will have had a full 12 days off before taking the field against Florida Atlantic.

Hopefully matters will clear weather wise this time around, although Saturday looks to be a challenge presently.

E3 The Owls are on the board as the Hawks return favor with an error that allows Kerr to take first. He steals 2nd, and then is driven in by Lashley's SGL to left field.  Lashley SLASHES to 2nd himself, but Sanger can't move him over and a fly ball ends the side. MON 2  FAU 1.
