The Owls (12-1) have outscored opponents 33-1 over the past three games (FL A&M, Princeton, Albany).

That's pretty ridiculous!

However, they are down to UNF right now 3-0 in the 2nd.

FAU (13-1) pulls it out down the stretch against UNF, and are now on their longest win streak since 2002!

Game release via SID Justin Johnson:

It was a battle between North Florida and FAU in the team’s second game of the night. The Ospreys struck first with a run in the first inning. They went on to score two more with two outs in the top of the second off of three singles and an error by second baseman Tatum Buckley. Samantha Messer came in to relieve Amanda Wilson and get the final out in the top of the second.

FAU answered in the third inning, tying the score 3-3. Leading off was left fielder Shell who singled to left field. She advanced off a single to right by Christina Martinez but was caught at third off a bunt by Thompson. With one out, Christina Martinez and Thompson stole second and third and both came in to score off Lochten’s single to right field. Laura Mann saw her first hit of the game in a double to right field, which would bring home Lochten.

UNF would take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth, but the Owls quickly answered. Facing a new UNF pitcher in the bottom of the fifth, Thompson started another rally with a bunt to third that she beat out. She would take second on an illegal pitch and advance to third off a sacrifice fly by Melissa Martinez. Another illegal pitch by Janet Snipe would score Thompson and tie things up. Sarah Howell, who came in to pinch run for Mann who had been hit by a pitch, advanced to second on that same illegal pitch. The Ospreys brought in a new pitcher, but the Owls were ready with Alex Miller singling to shortstop to advance Howell to third. A double steal would bring Howell home and Miller to third after she had previously stolen second. Buckley singled to third and advanced to third on a throwing. The single scored Miller, and a single by Rickey followed. Rickey advanced on another error by the North Florida third baseman, which would score Buckley and end the inning with FAU up 7-4.

The eighth run would come in the bottom of the sixth off a Melissa Martinez single to score Thompson. The Owls had a total of 12 hits from nine players with Christina Martinez leading the way with three. Lochten is credited with two RBIs and has the second most on the team thus far with 10. Messer remained strong in the circle with five strikeouts, no walks, and only giving up three hits. The senior is now a perfect 4-0 on the season.

The Owls will head to Baton Rouge, La. Next week to take part in the Purple and Gold Challenge hosted by LSU. The team’s first appearance will be on Friday, Feb. 27 in a doubleheader against Stephen F. Austin at 11 a.m. then Northwestern at 1:30 p.m. They will also play LSU and Ball State during the tournament.

“It was a good day for us and we are going to continue to focus on playing our game,” said Joan Joyce, head coach. “The first game we played our normal game of hitting and running and Amanda pitched well. The second game was a bit tougher as Northwestern State is good both offensively and defensively. It was tight game but Kylee (Hanson) was able to pitch us out of it.”

The Owls went .500 on Friday…release via SID Justin Johnson:

The Florida Atlantic University softball team split its two games at the Parents’ Weekend Tournament on Friday, losing to Coastal Carolina 3-1 and beating Hofstra 3-2 in eight innings.

Coastal Carolina broke open what had been a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, on back to back homeruns. The Owls (17-4) loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the fifth, but only managed one run, when Melissa Martinez was hit by a pitch.

FAU defeated Hofstra 3-2 in the nightcap. The Pride got on the board in the top of the first on a triple and wild pitch. The Owls tied the game in the bottom of the third when Delaney Rickey singled in Alex Miller. Hofstra immediately responded in the top of the fourth to regain the lead, this time at 2-1. Hofstra had runners at the corners with just one out in the fifth, but Kylee Hanson fanned the next two batters to escape the jam.

In the bottom of the seventh, Emily Lochten led off with a single up the middle before stealing second. She moved over on a Mickey Bell grounder and scored on a wild pitch. An infield single and wild pitch put the go ahead run on second, but a another grounder sent the game to extra innings.

With the international tiebreaker, the Pride began the eighth with a runner on second, but two strikeouts and a popup kept her from scoring. Bunt singles by Rickey and Lindsey Shell again loaded the bases for the Owls in the home half of the inning. Fielder’s choices cut down the potential winning run for the first two outs, but Lochten was able to rope a single to left for the game winner. Hanson struck out 12 for her sixth win of the season.

The Owls will return to action on Saturday when they play Bethune Cookman and Florida State.
