FAU Softball takes their C-USA opening series with a win on Sunday…game release via SID Justin Johnson:

An impressive offensive showing by the Florida Atlantic University softball team was key in an 8-4 over Louisiana Tech on Sunday. The two team combined for four homeruns in the game and the win clinched the series for the Owls.

Laura Mann broke open a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning with a homerun to center field to put FAU (21-7-1, 2-1 C-USA) up 2-0. The shot also scored Carnesha Thompson, who reached on a Lady Techster (16-7, 1-2) error. LA Tech cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer by Katie Smith.

Tatum Buckley’s solo homer to center led off the top of the fifth. The rest of the damage in the frame came with two outs. Thompson doubled in Lindsey Shell before coming around to score on an Emily Lochten base hit to make the score 5-1. Mann reached on a hit by pitch to set the table for Mickey Bell, who sent a ball over the fence in left, putting the Owls up 8-1.

The Lady Techsters hit their second long ball of the day in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-4. Two LA Tech batters walked in the sixth, but a flyout and strikeout ended the threat.
Kylee Hanson threw six innings for her team-high eighth win of the year. Buckley threw a perfect seventh inning in relief.

“Our bats came alive and our pitching was good,” said head coach Joan Joyce. “Louisiana Tech is a much improved team from last year and we are happy that we could start off conference play strong.”

The Owls will return home for a seven game homestand, beginning on Saturday, March 21 with a doubleheader vs. Middle Tennessee. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

FAU completes the sweep of the Blue Raiders on Sunday…game release via SID Justin Johnson:

Laura Mann’s three-run homerun was the big hit in the Florida Atlantic University softball team’s 5-0 win over Middle Tennessee on Sunday. The victory completed a three-game sweep of the Blue Raiders.

Back-to-back doubles by Christina Martinez and Carnesha Thompson gave FAU (24-7-1, 5-1 C-USA) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. After a fielder’s choice and a Melissa Martinez walk, Mann sent a blast over the right field fence to take a 4-0 lead.  The Owls added another run in the sixth when Alex Miller scored on a Delaney Rickey base hit.

Thompson went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Owls. Amanda Wilson threw five innings in the circle for her sixth win of the season. Tatum Buckley came on in relief and pitched two perfect innings.

“We swept the series which is always the goal,” said FAU head softball coach Joan Joyce. “Laura’s homerun was big and our pitchers did a great job all weekend, giving up just one unearned run.”

The Owls will return to action on Thursday when they host 20th-ranked UCF. Game time is set for 4:00 PM

FAU is receiving votes in the Top 25 Poll, but lost to fellow ranked state opponent UCF tonight in a relatively close contest…game release via SID Justin Johnson:

The Florida Atlantic University softball team lost to in-state rival UCF by a close 2-0 score on Tuesday night.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when the Knights (31-5) registered a run on a RBI single to right field. UCF added to its lead in the sixth when Samantha McCloskey scored on an infield single.

“We hit the ball hard all game, it just seems like it was always right at them,” said FAU softball coach Joan Joyce.

FAU (24-8-1) had its best chance to score in the bottom of the sixth when a Delaney Rickey single, a UCF throwing error and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, but a nice defensive play by the Knights’ third baseman ended the inning.

Kylee Hanson threw a complete game seven hitter in the circle for the Owls. Laura Mann and Christina Martinez also had hits for FAU.

The Owls will host rival FIU for a three game series this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader Saturday at 6:00 PM

The softball team split against WKU on Saturday…release via SID Justin Johnson:

Kylee Hanson’s impressive performance in the circle, along with a big day at the plate from Emily Lochten helped the Florida Atlantic University softball team defeat Western Kentucky 6-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The game was a scoreless tie until the top of the fifth inning when Lindsey Shell led off with a single to left. She advanced to second on a Hilltopper error, bringing Lochten to the plate. The freshman roped a base hit that drove in Shell. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Carnesha Thompson’s double allowed Christina Martinez and Lochten to score, putting the Owls up 3-0.

FAU (26-11-1, 7-4 C-USA) doubled its lead in the sixth inning on Lochten’s two-run double and a RBI base hit by Melissa Martinez. Hanson threw six innings, allowing only one hit and striking out nine. Tatum Buckley gave up a leadoff homerun in the seventh, but was able to retire the side to end the game.

The Owls lost game one of the doubleheader 3-1. The Hilltoppers (19-7, 6-2) scored two runs in bottom of the second and added another in the third on a solo homerun. FAU’s only run of the game came in the sixth inning when Lochten doubled in Christina Martinez.

“We faced a pretty good pitcher in the first game and we were able to get some hits off of her, we just couldn’t break through,” said FAU head coach Joan Joyce. “I was happy that we were able to put everything together in the second game, though. There’s sometimes a tendency to get down on yourself when you lose that first one.”

The two teams will meet in a rubber match at 1 p.m. eastern on Sunday.

The Owls sweep Charlotte with a win on Sunday, release via SID Justin Johnson:

Samantha Messer threw a complete game four-hitter in the Florida Atlantic University softball team’s 1-0 win over Charlotte on Sunday. The win clinched a series sweep for the Owls.

The game’s only run came in the bottom of the first when Melissa Martinez drove in Carnesha Thompson with a single to center field. Charlotte’s best chance to score came in the top of the second when the leadoff batter tripled to right, but a shallow flyout and two grounders ended the threat.

Messer picked up her seventh win of the season, throwing just 82 pitches in the process.

“Sam did a great job, only allowing two runners to reach second base all game,” said Joan Joyce, FAU head softball coach.  “We needed that from her today.”

FAU improved to 29-14-1 on the year and 10-5 in Conference USA play. Charlotte fell to 21-20 and 7-8.
