Did it even rain?

Both baseball and softball cancelled because of rain…

Nope, ironically just mentioned that in the ODU series preview.

And now FAU has to sandwich in a very important Non Conference game the last week of the season.

While they could have had everyone at 100% going into that final series.

After a week off due to three weather cancellations, and with the regular season winding down, the Owls got back to the field for a big pair of victories on Saturday against UTSA at FAU Softball Field.

Florida Atlantic (32-15-1, 13-6) took game one 3-2 in come from behind fashion, scoring two runs in the 3rd inning off a Roadrunner error, before adding the winner in the fourth due to another miscue by the visitors.

Down 2-0, a misplayed fly from Laura Mann resulted in the plating of both Carnesha Thompson and Christina Martinez in the third.

Thompson then scored for the second time in the next frame courtesy of a wild pitch.

Samantha Messer (6.1IP, 6H, 1ER, 3BB, 6K) earned with win.

Game two would remain deadlocked until Lindsey Shell's RBI single in the 4th gave the Owls a 1-0 lead, driving in freshman Tatum Buckley.

That lone score would stand for the final tally, and with rightful cause.

Sophomore hurler Kylee Hanson (14-3) was on fire in the circle, and fanned 15 UTSA (30-17, 12-7) batters for the contest.

The Owls will look to complete the series sweep, which would be their fifth of 2015, tomorrow at 1:00 PM.

FAU (32-16-1, 13-7) dropped the final game of their series to UTSA 4-0.

“We were sloppy defensively and left too many people on base, you’re not going to be very successful with that formula,” said FAU head softball coach Joan Joyce.

The Owls will conclude the regular season next weekend on the road at Southern Miss.

Florida Atlantic is currently in 2nd place in the eastern division and has locked up a spot in the 2015 C-USA Tournament.

The Golden Eagles (3-17 C-USA) own the worst record in the league.

As expected, FAU gets off to a good start for the weekend…today's release via SID Justin Johnson:

A huge day at the plate from Lindsey Shell helped the Florida Atlantic University softball team sweep a doubleheader from Southern Miss on Saturday.

The Owls (34-16-1, 15-7 C-USA) won the first game of the day 12-0. Shell led off the game with a bunt single before eventually scoring on a Golden Eagle (18-33, 3-20) wild pitch. In the second inning with Laura Mann on first, Delaney Rickey and Shell hit back-to-back triples to make the score 3-0. Christina Martinez drove in Shell with a base hit of her own for the final run of the inning.

Melissa Martinez led off the third inning with a single to right field, advanced to third on a Tatum Buckley double and scored on another USM wild pitch to push the lead to 5-0. The score wouldn’t change again until the top of the seventh, when the Owls busted out for seven runs. The seven runs came on four hits and three Golden Eagle errors. Shell and Melissa Martinez had RBI in the inning and Laura Mann roped a two-run base hit.

Shell tied a school record with four hits in the game, while Amanda Wilson threw six innings of two-hit ball for her eighth win of the year. Buckley pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief.

FAU won game two 5-1. Shell again led off the game with a bunt single. Christina Martinez followed with one of her own before both runners moved up on a Carnesha Thompson sacrifice bunt. Emily Lochten walked to load the bases, bringing Melissa Martinez to the plate. Melissa Martinez’s single scored Shell and Christina Martinez to make the score 2-0. Melissa Martinez later scored on a passed ball to give FAU a 3-0 lead.

Southern Miss’ only run of the day came on a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning. Melissa Martinez answered with a solo homerun of her own in the top of the third, making the score 4-1 in favor of FAU. Alex Miller tripled in the top of the sixth and scored on a Rickey infield single for the final tally of the game. In the circle, Kylee Hanson struck out 10 to pick up her team leading 15th win of the year.

For the day, Shell went 5-for-9 with four runs scored and two RBI. Paired with the results of other games around the conference, the sweep puts the Owls in second place in the Conference USA standings entering the final day of the regular season.

FAU will try to complete the series sweep on Sunday at 2 p.m. eastern. Fans with the C-USA Digital Network can watch on SouthernMiss.com.

FAU concludes the regular season by completing the sweep! Release via SID Justin Johnson:

A dramatic two-run double by Laura Mann was the key hit in the Florida Atlantic University softball team’s 3-2 win over Southern Miss on Sunday. The Owls scored all three of their runs in the top of the seventh inning.

USM (18-34, 3-21, C-USA) took an early lead in the bottom of the first on a single, sacrifice bunt and double to go up 1-0. The Owls threatened in both the second and third inning, but had runners thrown out at home while attempting a double steal each time. Christina Martinez appeared to tie the game on a Golden Eagle throwing error, but the home plate umpire ruled that she never touched home and called her out.

The Golden Eagles put runners on second and third with just one out in the fourth inning to chase starter Samantha Messer from the game. Kylee Hanson entered the game and was able to strike out the first batter she faced, but gave up a base hit that put USM up 2-0.

FAU loaded the bases in the fifth inning and Mann hit what initially appeared to be a grand slam, but the ball fell just short of the fence to end the frame.

Christina Martinez reached on a one out walk in the top of the seventh, followed by the third Golden Eagle error of the game, which allowed Carnesha Thompson to reach. Emily Lochten singled to center to load the bases. Melissa Martinez came to the plate and flew out to right field, scoring her sister Christina and allowing Thompson and Lochten to move up a base, setting the stage for Mann’s heroics.

Down to her final strike, Mann’s double to left center drove in Lochten and Thompson to put FAU up 3-2. Hanson retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh for her 15th win of the season. The Owls improve to 35-16-1 on the year and 16-7 in C-USA play. They will be the no. 2 seed for the Conference USA Tournament, which starts on Thursday, May 7 and will be hosted by FIU.

After game one produced a no-hitter, the third game of the day was not far away as Florida Atlantic sophomore Kylee Hanson was an out away from the feat. Hanson ended the contest with eight strikeouts, showing great concentration to keep the Mean Green off the board through two weather delays. The Owls held the lead throughout after a strong start that included a homer from junior Carnesha Thompson in the first inning. Florida Atlantic pushed its lead to four after a pair of insurance runs in the third inning before notching a final tally in the sixth. The Owls will play UTSA at 4:30 PM ET on Friday for a spot in the title game.
