C-USA Football: Games for Week of 10-03-15

A special Friday night game begins this week’s action, as Charlotte welcomes Temple to town. 49ers junior RB Kalif Phillips will to continue his productive running after gaining a season-best 165 yards last week, the fifth-highest total in Charlotte’s brief history. Phillips owns each of the top five and seven of the top eight games for the 49ers with 150 or more rushing yards in each.

Four conference matchups are on Saturday’s slate, highlighted by WKU at Rice. Hilltoppers senior QB Brandon Doughty continues to sizzle, having thrown for at least 400 yards in five of his last six games and three-straight, while also tossing for 350 passing yards by halftime in back-to-back contests. For the season, Doughty ranks second in FBS in passing yards (1,591) and passing yards per game (397.8). Owls senior QB Driphus Jackson is an established runner and passer himself, but the ground game has proven very successful for the Blue and Gray this fall. Rice has three different players that have run for more than 100 yards in a game and as a unit lead C-USA with an average of 228.0 yards per game rushing.

After a pair of tough back-to-back home losses, Old Dominion takes to the road to face Marshall. The Monarchs need to get junior RB Ray Lawry going after he was kept in check the last two Saturdays. That won’t be easy against a Thundering Herd unit that leads C-USA in scoring defense (22.0 ppg) and the nation in the number of three-and-outs produced (30 in four games). When Devon Johnson was injured last week, Marshall RB Tony Pittman came off the bench and rumbled for 129 yards on 24 carries (5.4 per rush) with a pair of touchdowns, including the seven-yard game-winner in the double-overtime win at Kent State.

North Texas returns to the road to face Southern Miss in the Golden Eagles conference opener. Mean Green sophomore RB Jeffrey Wilson showed more signs of his promise last Saturday at Iowa, returning from a hand injury to run for 74 yards on 14 carries. Southern Miss continues to have its offense clicking, as Nick Mullens threw for a career-best 447 yards and added a pair of touchdown throws in a close loss at Nebraska. The Golden Eagles now have accumulated 28 offensive plays of 20-plus yards in 2015 (five rushing, 23 passing), seven of which have produced touchdowns.  Southern Miss has produced 13 touchdowns that have taken less than two minutes off the game clock.

A developing rivalry will write another chapter when UTSA and UTEP meet in El Paso in the conference opener for both squads. Roadrunners junior RB Jarveon Williams had a program-record 170 yards rushing on 13 carries last Saturday vs. Colorado State and also scored two touchdowns. He has helped UTSA to the number three ranked running game in C-USA. UTEP appears to have found a quarterback after Ryan Metz led the Miners to a come-from-behind win for the second straight week, accounting for 321 total yards with two touchdown passes.

Middle Tennessee will look to become the second C-USA team (WKU) to defeat Vanderbilt this season when the Commodores come to Murfeesboro Saturday night. The Blue Raiders, who have won three straight in the series vs. Vandy, have seen their passing game flourish under redshirt freshman QB Brent Stockstill. Richie James leads C-USA in receptions with 34, while senior Ed Batties ranks third with 30 catches.

Louisiana Tech will seek a win over in-state rival Louisiana-Lafayette for the second straight season. In last year’s 48-20 victory in Lafayette, Bulldogs senior RB Kenneth Dixon had a 99-yard touchdown run. That was one of 59 career rushing scores for Dixon, who moved into 10th place all-time in NCAA Division I history in this past Saturday’s win over FIU.

FIU will close out its non-conference slate with its first-ever meeting with Massachusetts. The Panthers defense has allowed a league-low nine touchdowns through four games and will look to contain Minutemen QB Blake Frohnapel, a former Marshall signal-caller, in Amherst, Mass.

Florida Atlantic will be off for the period.
