C-USA Football: Games for Week of 10-17-15

The season hits its halfway point this week and WKU will visit North Texas to get an early start to week seven on Thursday night.  Behind triggerman Brandon Doughty, the Hilltoppers have three highly productive receivers that all have 30 or more catches in junior WR Taywan Taylor (36 for 649 yards, 8 TDs), senior WR Jared Dangerfield (36 for 387, 4 TDs) and senior TE Tyler Higbee (30 for 459, 6 TDs).  WKU also has five receivers with 15 or more catches – only Texas Tech (six) has more.  The Mean Green defense will certainly have a challenge ahead of them against the nation’s eighth-ranked scoring offense and they will face it under interim coach and offensive coordinator Mike Canales after head coach Dan McCarney was let go after 4+ seasons at the helm.

Marshall will carry a four-game winning streak into its game at Florida Atlantic, a school that has played the Thundering Herd very tough the past two seasons.  The two defenses could play a key role in the outcome of this one.  Marshall’s defense has outstanding this season, leading C-USA in scoring defense (17.5 points per game) and pass defense (187.5 yards per game), while registering 13 sacks, one behind the Owls league-leading total of 14.  The Herd and the Owls are tied for the fewest passing touchdowns allowed in the conference this season with six.  Florida Atlantic’s red zone defense has proven to be the second-stingiest in C-USA, allowing just 11 touchdowns on 21 opponent trips inside the 20-yard line.

An important East Division battle also takes place when FIU visits Middle Tennessee.  The Panthers are coming off one of the best offensive performances in school history and will try to continue that as they seek a second straight win over the Blue Raiders.  Sophomore WR Thomas Owens has emerged as a playmaker in second season with FIU, leading the team’s receivers with 30 catches for 396 yards.  He has caught a touchdown in five consecutive games and his six receiving touchdowns ranks him ninth among all FBS players.  The Blue Raiders counter with the league’s most productive receiving duo in freshman WR Richie James and senior Ed Batties.  They are both tied for fourth in the FBS with 49 receptions, with Batties third in the FBS in receiving touchdowns (9) and 14th in yards (572), while James is 13th in yardage (588) and has three scores.

Louisiana Tech plays the lone non-conference game this week, making the short trip to Starkville to face Mississippi State.  Senior QB Jeff Driskel has flourished in his first six games in the Bulldogs offense, passing for 1.812 yards and 11 touchdowns with just three interceptions, while adding five rushing scores.  The 1,812 passing yards are the most he has accrued through any season in his career, surpassing the 1,646 yards he passed for at Florida over 12 games in 2012.

Two of the newest programs in the FBS meet for the first time when Charlotte plays at Old Dominion.  Both teams are coming off their bye week and both come back armed with talented running backs. Monarchs sophomore Ray Lawry has topped the 150-yard mark three times this season and leads Conference USA with 635 yards through five games (127.0 per outing), to go along with seven rushing touchdowns.  49ers junior Kalif Phillips has topped the 100-yard mark each of his last two games and is fourth in the conference with 499 yards and a pair of scores.
