C-USA Football: Games for Week of 11-21-15

There are just two weeks remaining in the regular season, but plenty remains to be decided.  There are five conference games on this Saturday’s schedule that will help answer some of the lingering questions.

Middle Tennessee returns home to host North Texas, seeking a win to gain bowl-eligibility.  The Blue Raiders will be looking to make it three straight victories after a 24-17 win at Florida Atlantic.  The pass and catch duo of Brent Stockstill and Richie James are firmly notching their places in the Middle Tennessee record book as freshmen.  Stockstill’s 23 TD passes are a new school record and he is the first Blue Raider to throw for 3,000 yards in one season.  After posting the third-highest single-game receiving total in school history with 198 at FAU, James became just the second MT player to top 1,000 receiving yards in a season (now at 1,007).  The Mean Green are playing in the state for the second straight week after falling at Tennessee last Saturday.

WKU carries its 6-0 league record to FIU for the first meeting between the schools since 2012.  The Hilltoppers can clinch at least a tie for the East Division title with a win, while the Panthers need a victory for bowl-eligibility in their final regular season game.  WKU senior QB Brandon Doughty, who has moved into the Top 25 in FBS history in career passing touchdowns with 97, has been especially potent in the first two quarters of games.  In the first half this season, Doughty is now 178-of-252 (70.6 percent) for 2,522 yards, 26 touchdowns and three INTs.  FIU sophomore QB Alex McGough has improved in every statistical category during his second season as the Panthers starter, completing 65 percent of his passes for 2,627 yards and 21 touchdowns with just six interceptions.

Louisiana Tech returns from its bye week traveling to El Paso to face UTEP.  The Bulldogs offense has now piled up more than 400 total yards in all 10 games this season, continuing the school record for most consecutive games to start a season.  On the year, the Bulldogs is averaging 487.7 yards per game, the third-highest average through 10 games in school history behind only the 2012 and 1998 teams. Defensively, LA Tech has now allowed less than 17 points in seven games this season, including the last four.  The Miners, who are 3-0 at home in Conference USA games this season, need to win this game and at North Texas next week in order to become bowl-eligible a second straight season.

Southern Miss can double its 2014 win total if they can post a victory over Old Dominion, while the Monarchs can become bowl-eligible if they win.  The Golden Eagles 682-yard offensive effort in last week’s 65-10 win at Rice has moved them to first place in C-USA in total offense, averaging 525.1 yards per game.  Senior QB Nick Mullens is averaging 327.1 yards through the air with 30 touchdown passes.  Junior QB David Washington has led ODU to three straight wins as the starting QB, averaging 289.3 passing yards with six TD throws.

Rice makes the short trip to UTSA, looking to snap a three-game losing streak and keep the possibility of a fourth straight bowl game alive against a Roadrunners team coming off a road win last week.  Owls freshman RB Austin Walter posted 241 all-purpose yards, rushing for 65 on 10 attempts and returning nine kickoffs (matching the second most in school history) for 176 yards (seventh-most in school annals).  UTSA junior RB Jarveon Williams rushed for a school-record 181 yards on 19 carries with a touchdown at Charlotte, gaining 150 of his yards in the second half to lead the Runners to the win.

Rounding out the action is a pair of games at SEC foes, as Florida Atlantic plays in-state rival Florida and Charlotte faces its first SEC opponent when it visits Kentucky.

WKU (8-2) and Marshall (9-2) have reached bowl-eligibility in the East Division, with West Division members Louisiana Tech (7-3) and Southern Miss (7-3) also eligible.  FIU, Middle Tennessee and Old Dominion are one win from bowl-eligibility, while Rice and UTEP need two victories.  C-USA has seven guaranteed bowl spots for the 2015 season.
