From lofty visions to big layoffs at UM | Miami Herald
Lots of layoffs and looks like lots of REAL expensive hires down here. maybe this will help our young Meical School getr better funding from the State who have poured money into a private institution. Sorry to hear of their issues but somehow we have to get more focus from the State on improving FAU - a STATE college!

This is a reprint of a story from May 2012. Kind of old news.

I had heard they had money issues but I never looked into it.
Last month I was rotating through a clinic with some UM students who said, and I don't know how much of this is true, that they primarily do their rotations away from Jackson Memorial (UM's teaching hospital) because Miami wants to be a bigger force in Palm Beach County, but now I have to wonder if they're having so many internal problems that they can't even reasonably accommodate their own students.
In any case, I doubt this will impact us.
FAU wants another building for its medical programs, ideally to turn Boca Regional into a more legitimate training hospital, and of course establish more residencies in the Palm Beach County area. They have Internal Medicine now (Bethesda), I believe surgery is (or will soon) be coming online (JFK, maybe Bethesda) and they're trying to get Emergency Medicine as well - hopefully not at Bethesda!
Any money to help those ends would be good for us.
There's also some discontent among students in the FAU Med program who feel like the school pushes too hard to get people to go into geriatrics which is a necessary but awful field.
