The calendar moves to October on Saturday and Conference USA will signify the start of the new month with five league games.
The Shula Bowl will be renewed in south Florida when Florida Atlantic makes the short trip to Miami to face FIU in the conference opener for both teams. Ron Cooper takes over as coach of the Panthers as they look to get their offense going against an Owls squad that has won two of the three meetings when the teams have been members of C-USA.
Old Dominion will look to make it two straight conference victories when it visits Charlotte. This will be just the second meeting between these two very young programs.
UTEP and Louisiana Tech played a nail-biter in El Paso last year and the Miners will be looking to avenge that two-point loss when they meet the Bulldogs in Ruston Saturday night.
Two teams that had come-from-behind wins last week meet when Middle Tennessee visits North Texas. The Blue Raiders rallied to top LA Tech, while The Mean Green posted a double-overtime win at Rice.
West Division foes Rice and Southern Miss meet up in Hattiesburg. The Owls offense had their best outing of the season last Saturday, but the Rice defense must now deal with the potent one-two Golden Eagle punch QB Nick Mullens and RB Ito Smith.
In non-conference play, Marshall visits ACC foe Pittsburgh and WKU welcomes Houston Baptist.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1
Old Dominion at Charlotte (CUSA TV) 6 p.m.
Florida Atlantic at FIU (beIN) 7 p.m.
UTEP at Louisiana Tech (ASN) 7 p.m.
Middle Tenn. at N. Texas (Campus Insiders) 7 p.m.
Rice at Southern Miss 7 p.m.
Houston Baptist at WKU (CUSA TV) 7 p.m.

Look how fast USM turned things around. They had a 23 game losing streak which ended in 2013 and finished 1-11 that year and were 3-9 in 2014. They were bowl eligible last year and finished with a 9-5 record and are 4-1 so far this year.Posted On: Oct 1st 2016, 11:35 PM #360338
AND lost their HC last year too and brought in an FCS HC! Football is not rocket science but we have made playing D impossible and even with "excellent" recruiter as HC, HE has seriously hurt the overall talant level on the field by LIMITING our recruiting base.
PROOF - Lose 2 NFL caliber DT's and not replace them with JUCO talent but freshman; UCF (which gave up almost 38 PPG last year) gives up 80 yards rushing to FIU, WE give up 270!

Oh yeah, I forgot, they still recruit JUCOS (5 the past cycle). You DON'T have to sign a buch, just to fill your NEEDS (Like losing 2 senior NFL caliber DT's at the same time!).
As PATETIC as Coach Roc is,, USM also scores points! 44 vs. Rice yesterday. As bad as the D is, if our O would show up and play BOTH HALVES we would be 3-2 not 1-4 right now and looking good for a Bowl!
3 point 2nd half vs, MAC Ball St.!, 7 point 2nd half vs. 0-4 FIU! That is 10 2nd half points scored by our O in games we led at the half over 2 games vs. suspect D's! WTF!!!!!!!!!!

The Defensive Player of the Week honor went to FIU senior LB Anthony Wint, who had 12 tackles and a forced fumble in the Panthers Shula Bowl victory.
For the second time in three weeks, the Special Teams Player of the Week award was given to WKU junior PR Nacarius Fant, who had a 50-yard punt return for a touchdown on Saturday to become the first FBS player to return two punts for scores this season.
C-USA Football Players of the Week are voted on by a panel of the league’s media.
