Here's a longer video from yesterday, Owls looking to play fast, although I think this time it will in fact be faster:

Notables from Spring Football Session 2…

· Redshirt junior wide receiver Kamrin Solomon had a fingertip catch for a big gain during individual drills and added another nice catch during 7-on-7
·
A portion of the team drills focused on the run game, however senior receiver Nate Terry took advantage of that time to record a nice catch

· During the second team session, the defensive line was credited with a sack and on the following play, redshirt sophomore receiver James Brunson had a nice catch for a big gain

· Redshirt freshman Jordan Helm had the day’s first interception and returned it for a score.

· Orlando native AJ Turman broke through the line for a 10-yard gain up the middle and added a three-yard reception to his day’s work

· The final two big plays were credited to the defense which recorded another sack before sophomore linebacker Rashad Smith came away with an interception

· The day ended with an unscripted first-and-goal at the five, followed by scripted special teams work

Head Coach Lane Kiffin

“I thought the guys had a lot of really good energy. Obviously, we have a lot to clean up, too many turnovers, work on snaps, I thought the guys competed well. There was some competitive stuff within the team and the guys responded well.”

On the goal line work

“I just try to do things that they don’t know is coming. The coaches don’t either. They have to adjust. The coordinators have to make calls that aren’t on the scripts, aren’t on the plans. It usually creates a competitive situation where the guys kinda get into it. It is what a game is like.”

Was DeAndre throwing those picks? I'm not surprised if it was Driskel but DeAndre. Come on bro.

Did you know a lot of time in practice they tell the QB's to throw the ball no matter what.
It's good work for the DB's WR'S to work on fighting for the ball and pointless for any QB to pull it down and run it in shorts and shirt.

Yeah but you practice what you do in games.  I heard all of the interceptions were thrown by DeAndre.  This does not bode well for the season.

OMG that is so cliché.
And you're breaking stuff down from a 45 sec clip holy cow.

You want to get guys work and throwing balls out of bounds or taking a sack  does nothing for anyone.
Since you can not actually sack the qb in practice the DL will get the QB touch him and Qb's are trained to finish going through the progressions and throw the ball so again DB's and WR's get work.
You only have so much time with these players on the field.
You can always go back through film and have them tell you which ones would have been thrown in a game time situation.

Notables from Spring Football Session 3, the first in pads…

· Redshirt sophomore transfer quarterback De’Andre Johnson hit redshirt senior wide receiver Kalib Woods for a 10-yard gain in the opening minutes of the first team session.

· Redshirt sophomore running back Kerrith Whyte had a 10-yard gain up the middle in the same session and redshirt junior quarterback Jason Driskel found redshirt junior Kamrin Solomon for a seven-yard connection.

· During 7-on-7 sophomore linebacker Rashad Smith busted up a play, “Motor” Devin Singletary had a big run which he made bigger by breaking tackles, Johnson found redshirt sophomore Ladante Harris and Driskel hit Woods during 7-on-7.

· The second team session saw Driskel hit redshirt sophomore wide receiver Tavaris Harrison and Johnson found Woods.

· The team celebrated a touchdown catch and carry by redshirt junior wide receiver Bobby Mitchell from Driskel. Also, Driskel avoided the sack and hit sophomore receiver John Mitchell for a 10-yard gain.

· Singletary broke through the line for a long scoring run and followed it up with another big gain.

· Redshirt junior linebacker Kris Harris stripped the ball and returned it for a score.

· In the final team session, Driskel hit Solomon which prompted a TD single from Head Coach Lane Kiffin. The very next play was a similar call with Driskel hitting Woods, which incited the same reaction.

Head Coach lane Kiffin

“Really, there is not a lot of difference for us. We are not tackling, it is not a scrimmage format so the way we practice even in no pads is the same as pads. I thought the guys did a good job of understanding to protect the team and how to stay up, because a lot of times you put pads on, and guys go out and starts tackling and getting guys hurt. The guys did a good job. The offense really made some explosive plays there at the end of practice but there are two sides to that. On defense, we have to stay back and do a better job limiting big plays.”

Notables from Spring Football Session 4…

· During the 7-on-7 portion of practice, redshirt junior quarterback Jason Driskel hit sophomore Devin Singletary, who hauled in the pass five yards out and scampered another 10.

· Redshirt freshman Jordan Helm, who had an interception on Saturday, tipped a ball, but redshirt junior wide receiver Kamrin Solomon made the catch while falling under the ball.

· Redshirt sophomore De’Andre Johnson found Ladante Harris, a redshirt sophomore, for a long reception and sophomore Chris Tooley broke up a sure 60-yard score to end the highlights of the period.

· The first team session worked with the running backs and mixed in passes to keep the defense honest. Johnson found senior “Buddy” Gregory Howell, Jr. for a five-yard gain and then hauled in a high snap, kept, and rushed for more than 10 yards.

· The defense took advantage of another high snap to record a sack.

· The Owls then worked third-and-long with Johnson moving the chains twice, first connecting with redshirt senior Kalib Woods and then redshirt junior Bobby Mitchell for a first down.

· Driskel got into the action with 20-yard connections to Harris and then transfer running back AJ Turman.

· The final team session saw a lot more running but also had Johnson finding sophomore John Mitchell and Woods.

· Johnson also fell victim to a defensive sack and a pass breakup by redshirt freshman Korel Smith.

· Driskel moved the ball down field capitalizing on both the pass and run games. Senior Henry Bussey III started the drive with a reception and redshirt sophomore James Brunson followed.

· Driskel hit senior Nate Terry to move downfield. The defense stifled the drive momentarily with two defenders tipping the ball and defended a double-pass attempt, but the drive continued into the end zone with a pass to sophomore Harrison Bryant and then the finishing touches with a 12-yard reception by redshirt sophomore “Pico” Tavaris Harrison.

· The defense prevented the two-point conversion, to end the session.

Head Coach Lane Kiffin

“The defense probably had their best practice so far. It has been a big issue, limiting explosive plays. Our offense has done a great job making a lot of them, especially in team periods. That was our emphasis for our defense and it was good to see. We have been giving up a lot of touchdowns in team periods and today in the six series they probably didn’t score at all in those six series. That was good to see our guys get better. Obviously, we have a long way to go, but the guys are working hard.”

Notables from Spring Football Session 5…

·  In the first team session, the offense focused on the run game. Redshirt junior quarterback Jason Driskel opened the session with a 10-yard pass to redshirt senior Kalib Woods.

·  De’Andre Johnson followed with a five-yard keeper on the next play and did the same thing a few plays later.

·  Redshirt sophomore Kerrith Whyte ran for five as did “Buddy” Gregory Howell, Jr. Redshirt freshman Steven Frank also saw time under center.

· The Owls moved to 7-on-7 where again the focus was on the running backs’ integration into the passing game.

·  Driskel hit redshirt senior Marcus Clark and Howell. Sophomore receivers John Mitchell and James Brunson also made catches while Mitchell had a leaping effort to tip the ball, then caught it as he came back down to the ground. Johnson found Brunson in the end zone to end the session.

· The second team portion saw Johnson use his legs for a big gain, then “Motor” Devin Singletary broke free for a 75-yard run.

·  Clark followed, shortly thereafter with a run down the opposite sideline. Whyte then moved the chains on third down

Head Coach Lane Kiffin

“I thought the guys had a really good energy today for practice. We had some explosive plays…It was a good day. No. 5 (“Motor” Devin Singletary) showed some really special moves. He has a chance to be a really special player.”
