FAU Men Upset UTEP for 1st C-USA Win of 2017-18

The FAU men's basketball team used a hot shooting second half to snap a six-game losing streak and defeat UTEP 73-66 on Thursday night.

The Miners (6-11, 1-4 C-USA) built an eight-point lead at the nine-minute mark of the first half. FAU rallied to within two with less than a minute left in the half, but a UTEP triple just beat the halftime buzzer to but the Miners up 34-29 at the break.

Trailing 39-32 early in the second half, the Owls went on a 29-9 run to take a 61-48 lead with six minutes left to go in the game. UTEP responded with an 11-0 run to pull within two at 61-59 with 3:48 remaining.

FAU answered with five straight points, capped by a Ronald Delph (12 PT, 17 RB) dunk to go up seven with 1:35 on the clock. The Miners hit a three-pointer to narrow the margin to four, but the Owls went 6-for-7 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the victory.

The Owls were six point underdogs for the tilt, and are now 7-9 overall and 1-3 in Conference USA play.

Justin Massey paced the Owls with 18 points, 13 coming in the second half and added four rebounds. Delph's 17 grabs was a career high for the senior, who now has 10 double-doubles to his credit at FAU.

The team will conclude their trip to Texas with a match-up against UTSA on Saturday at 3:00 PM.

Not to downplay any win for our basketball program, but it speaks volumes about where we are that beating a team that coming into the game was 6-10 and 1-3 in conference is considered an upset.

I understand we were underdogs, but on paper this just looks like 2 bad teams.  Still plenty of conference games left, so hopefully the guys build some momentum with this conference victory.

Not to derail the thread or beat a dead horse, but changes need to be made…

On a side note:

Three of the women's team's incoming class members have been nominated for the McDonald’s All-American Game.

For those who don't know, that is a BIG deal.

So, while Jabir is quietly staging a C-USA takeover like Kiffin, we have will continue with playground ball and hope more of last night's outcome occur in random fashion.
