2017-2018 FAU Women's Basketball Schedule

The women’s basketball team fell on the road to Conference USA first-place Western Kentucky 82-63 on Saturday afternoon.

For the second outing in a row, leading scorer Sasha Cedeno was once again contained, managing just seven points on 2-of-9 shooting for the contest.

The Owls trailed 21-20 at the end of the first quarter, but but WKU (17-5, 8-1) used a 23-0 run midway through the second to pull away for good.

FAU struggled to maintain control of the ball, giving up 21 turnovers to the visiting Hilltoppers, and were out-rebounded 49-38.

Danneal Ford led FAU with 25 points, tying her career high. It was her third consecutive game with 20-plus points and ninth straight in double digits.

Now concluding a three game road stint, Florida Atlantic (10-9, 4-4) will play their next two contests at home with Middle Tennessee due up this Thursday at 7:00 PM.

After falling behind by 16 in the third quarter, the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team charged back to get within four but ultimately fell to Middle Tennessee, 69-65, at FAU Arena on Thursday night.

FAU (10-10, 4-5 C-USA) used a strong second half to surge back into the game against Middle Tennessee after a slow first half.

After going back-and-forth through the first part of the first quarter, the Lady Raiders went on a 7-0 run to end the period to take a 14-8 lead heading into the second.

Middle Tennessee (14-9, 6-4) extended that run to 15-0 through the beginning of the second frame. Melinda Myers put a stop to it with an up-and-under basket. Both teams traded baskets from there and the Owls used a 5-0 run to get within 10 points late in the half. Middle Tennessee responded with a three as time expired in the second quarter to take a 13-point lead into halftime.

At the 7:41 mark of the third quarter, the Lady Raiders hit a three to go ahead by 16, their largest lead of the game. The Owls went on a 7-0 run, powered by five points from Sasha Cedeño, to get within nine. With a little over a minute left in the quarter, Ra’Kyra Gabriel made a putback and DaChé Williams made a three to get FAU within four heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was back-and-forth between the two teams but FAU was never able to get closer than four points.

Cedeño led all scorers with 20 points and recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. The senior went 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

The Owls will stay home to next host North Texas on Saturday at 7:00 PM.

The women's basketball team lost their fourth straight contest after a 65-51 showing against visiting North Texas on Saturday night at FAU Arena.

Florida Atlantic (10-11, 4-6) is now 2-6 over their last eight contests.

The Owls raced out to 21-12 lead as the first quarter closed, and would hold on for a 31-28 at halftime.

However, they ran into scoring troubles therafter as the mean Green (13-10, 4-7) enjoyed a 37-20 edge the rest of the way.

North Texas outshot host FAU 41% to 27% from long range.

Sasha Cedeño led the Owls with 20 points and was once again perfect from the free throw line while hitting 6-of-6 attempts.

FAU will next hit the road for a pair of games against Old Dominion (Feb. 14) and FIU (Feb. 17) respectively.

FAU women’s basketball team dropped an 86-65 decision on the road to rival FIU on Saturday afternoon.

After a 59-54 mid-week loss at Old Dominion the loss is the sixth in a row for the squad.

FAU (10-13, 4-8) was dominant in the first 1:30 of the game, jumping out to a 7-0 lead.

However, the Panthers responded with a 15-0 run to permanently take the lead. In the second period FIU had two 11-0 runs, outscoring the Owls 27-10 in the frame.

Florida Atlantic tried to get back into it in the third quarter scoring 23 points but couldn’t keep FIU (7-19, 4-9) off the scoreboard as they connected on 53% percent of their shots.

Sasha Cedeño's 17 points pushed her past 1,000 career point mark.

The Owls will be back in action on Friday against Southern Miss at 7:00 PM at FAU Arena.

The girls started the conference slate so well. I was really getting my hopes up that they would be able to make some noise come March. Looks like we are still a piece or two away from that becoming a reality.

FAU women's basketball defeated Southern Miss on Friday night behind a career-high 27 points from Danneal Ford.

The win snaps a six game losing streak for the Owls.

Florida Atlantic shot a blistering 53% from the field for the night and sank 47% (9-of-19) of their long distance attempts.

Southern Miss was held to just 3-of-17 (18%) beyond the arc and allowed the Owls 21 fast break points in the contest.

FAU will conclude their 2017-18 home schedule when they host rival FIU on Sunday at 2:00 PM in The Burrow.

The women's basketball team won its second straight game on Sunday afternoon in a 67-63 victory against rival FIU on Senior Day.

Prior to the start of the game, FAU honored six outgoing members who played their final game in the Burrow on Sunday. Nika Zyryanova, DaChé Williams, Melinda Myers, Raven Doyle, Malia Kency and Sasha Cedeño were all recognized for their contributions to the program.

FAU (12-13, 6-8) trailed FIU (7-20, 4-10 C-USA) in the first and third quarters were able to stay ahead in the fourth quarter to claim a 67-63 victory.  

The Owls fell behind early in the first quarter but came back to tie the game twice before eventually taking the lead at the 1:35 mark on a layup from Ra’Kyra Gabriel. FAU ended the quarter on a 7-0 run.

FAU outscored FIU (7-20, 4-10) in a low-scoring second quarter, 14-11, and was able to expand the lead to 10 points at one point. The Owls went into halftime with a 29-21 lead.

Midway through the third quarter, the Panthers used a 10-0 run to retake the lead. Danneal Ford cut the run with a layup and sparked a FAU run of nine to again change the lead into the Owls favor. That run was led by the FAU guards with five points from Malia Kency and four from Danneal Ford. FIU hit a three to end the quarter and the score going into the final frame was 45-44.

FIU opened the fourth quarter outscoring the Owls, 9-2, and took a six point lead with 7:15 left in the game. A pair of threes from Malia Kency and DaChé Williams cut the lead to one and Danneal Ford made a jumper to give FAU the lead once again. Down the stretch, the Owls were able to make a few timely shots and made free throws to keep the lead and ultimately win.

The Owls outrebounded FIU 49-39 and took advantage of the discrepancy by scoring 19 second chance points and allowed zero second chance points from the Panthers.

Florida Atlantic will end the regular season on the road, next facing Marshall in Huntington at 6:00 PM on Thursday.

The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team won its third-straight game on Thursday night with a 62-55 win at Marshall in the Cam Henderson Center to clinch a spot in the Conference USA Tournament.

"We’ve come pretty far and I’m pretty proud of them. Considering all of the injuries and kids stepping into roles they aren’t familiar with, I’m very, very proud of them", said Coach Jim Jabbir.

The Thundering Herd took an early 4-2 lead, but the Owls jumped ahead with four-straight points from Danneal Ford. The rest of the first quarter was back-and-forth between the two teams and the frame ended tied, 11-11.

Marshall came into the second period and hit a three but FAU responded with a 13-0 run to take a 24-14 lead. The Owls (13-13, 7-8) were able to double up Marshall in the second period outscoring the Thundering Herd, 18-9.

After trading baskets to start the third quarter, Marshall went on a 7-0 run to bring the score within three points. The Owls answered with five straight and took a 46-40 lead into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter began with two threes from FAU and one from Marshall. The Thundering Herd (9-20, 3-13) used an 8-0 run to make it a one-point game with 2:57 left in the game. The Owls scored seven straight with five coming from Raven Doyle to go ahead 59-51.

The Herd took the foul and quick score method, but the Owls hit five-of-six free throws down the stretch.

Raven Doyle had one of the best games of her career against the Thundering Herd, securing her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Over the last four games, Doyle is averaging 11.5 rebounds per game, resetting her career high three times. The senior was also 3-of-3 from the free throw line.

“I think she’s come to play and she’s realizing this is it and she has to give it her best and she is". Jabbir.

The Owls conclude the 2017-18 regular season when the visit Charlotte tomorrow at 5:00 PM.

The women’s basketball team rallied in the second half against Charlotte, but were unable to make the comeback falling 83-69 in the final game of the regular season.

The Owls will be the 7th seed at the Conference USA Tournament and will take on 11th seed UTSA next Wednesday at 2:30 PM.

FAU (13-14, 7-9 C-USA) clawed back get within six points of Charlotte (14-15, 10-6 C-USA) after falling behind by 24 points early in the third quarter, but were not able to complete the rally.

Raven Doyle recorded her second straight double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Doyle has had double digit rebounds in four of the last five games, averaging 12.2 boards in that span.

Malia Kency led the team in scoring with 17 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three point range. In the last two games, the senior has made 10 threes.

Danneal Ford had 12 points, six assists and two rebounds. Her 129 assists this season is the fifth most in a single season in FAU history.
