Game Notes

Owls

Florida Atlantic (13-4) followed up a weekend sweep of Seton Hall with two more home wins, topping North Florida by scores of 14-1 and 10-9. Over the last four contests, the team has outscored their opposition 45-13, and the last two games featured 10 FAU home runs.

All told now, 11 Owls have hit 17 home runs, led by Tyler with four and three by Gunnar Lambert. The squad has 30 additional extra base hits (25 doubles and five triples). Over the last five games, the team batting average (.250) has risen 32 points with almost double the amount of the extra base hits (24 to 47).

Three FAU Players find themselves above the .300 threshold at the plate in Pedro Pages (.343), Joe Montes (.333), and Frank (.302).

Starting ptichers Jake Miednik, Kyle Marman and Vince Coletti are a combined 8-2 with a 1.39 ERA, walking a total of just 10 batters versus 91 strikeouts. As of Monday, Marman ranked No. 1 in Division I with his four wins, is fourth among all pitchers with a 19.5:1 strikeout to walk ratio, and is ninth with 39 strikeouts.

Monarchs

Old Dominion (7-9) enters the weekend on a roll offensively, having scored a combined 30 runs in the last two games. The Monarchs are hitting .309 as a club, which ranks 19th in the nation.

Individually, Vinnie Pasquantino is coming off of a historic performance in the win over VMI. The 2017 Freshman All-American went 6-for-6, tying the school record for hits, with two doubles, a home run and five RBI.

Culver Lamb and Matt Schwarz have also led ODU offensively. Lamb is hitting a team-leading .364 with seven extra-base hits, while Schwarz is hitting .361 with 12 RBIs and five stolen bases.

Improved hitting or bad pitching? We shall see soon, I pray it is the hitting!!!!

Seton Hall is no slouch. For the Non-baseball fans out there, next weekend's series with SoMiss will be as good as it gets. Two talented teams. Two great Coaches. Two great starting pitching  staffs.. If you are ever thinking about coming to a game , the Friday night and Saturday 4:00 game should be outstanding.

Our arms are deep. Only gave up two hits after the fifth. That's strong.

Need to get a better start from Miednick though, 8K in six great but also 8 hits and 4 ER, that would be an ERA of 6!

Very much agree. Two games in a row where he started a little slow.

Digging a bit deeper into Miednik's "B-Game," I'll take it over most others "A-Game." Of the hits, 6 were of the seeing-eye variety, all of those singles. Of the other 2 hits, the only XBH was the 2B to the 1st batter he faced. His FO:GO was 6:5, but 4 of the FO were IF pop-ups (I really wish the standard stats separated FO into IFFO and OFFO). In 6 IP, only 4 fly balls to the OF: 2 for hits, 2 for outs.

Another thing to consider is that it was a bit cold, 50° at the start and probably a few degrees less in the 5th. Pitchers lose feel for the ball in their fingertips when it is cold, and the impact of the difference is more notable with the better pitchers - it's really difficult to deflate a baseball to compensate. He still threw a bit over 63% strikes, which most pitchers would consider a very good game - though Jake has been sitting at an astounding 70%. I'm guessing about 6-8 pitches that would have normally broken into the paint area stayed just off, and a few more stayed up a tad more rather than breaking down. It's a lot easier for a pitcher to adapt from cold weather to warm than from warm to cold. We never even had a practice anywhere near that cold.

Reminds me of the "triple" he gave up a week ago. A pop fly that landed between  the first baseman, second baseman, and right fielder. A hundred and fifty feet from home plate.
