Outscored 19-5 over last 3 games. With good pitching you can win by scoring 5 runs (not good though!) but giving up over 6 runs a game is just pretty bad!

The softball team opened Conference USA play by sweeping its doubleheader with UTEP on Monday night. The Owls won game one 2-1 in eight innings and game two 6-0.  The Owls are now 14-13 overall.

UTEP (10-15, 0-2 ) second baseman Courtney Clayton hit a solo homerun in the top of the first inning of game one that stood as the game’s only run until the bottom of the sixth inning when Alex Miller drove in Emily Lochten with a base hit to left that tied the game. Sami Williams attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate. The Owls got the winning run to third with just one out in the seventh, but left her stranded. Miller came up again with runners on second and third in the eighth inning and roped another single to left that scored Tatum Buckley.

Game two was scoreless until the bottom of the third when UTEP pitchers issued six free passes which, along with hits by Madisyn Palmer and Alex Miller, allowed the Owls to take a 5-0 lead. The next inning, Palmer walked, stole second, advanced to third on a Samantha Lageyre sacrifice bunt and scored on a Miner wild pitch to increase the lead to 6-0.

The Owls, who have now won three straight, will try for the series sweep at noon on Tuesday.

Emily Lochten’s three-run homerun was the big hit, while Tatum Buckley threw a complete game six-hitter in Florida Atlantic's 4-0 win over Charlotte on Sunday.

FAU has won both Conference USA series so far this season and is now 17-15 overall and 5-1 in C-USA play.

The contest was scoreless in the top of the third when Kaitlyn Burke and Samantha Lageyre drew back-to-back walks, bringing Lochten to the plate. Her sixth homerun of the season put the Owls up 3-0. FAU added to its lead in the fourth when Alex Miller scored on Burke’s single to increase the lead to 4-0.

That was more than enough offense for Buckley, as she scattered six hits and struck out three for her ninth win and fifth shutout of the season. Charlotte didn’t have a runner advance past second base.

The Owls return home to host Marshall for a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 24. First pitch is set for 4:00 PM.

FAU softball (18-16, 6-2) team split a doubleheader against Marshall on Saturday. After a 4-0 loss in the first game, the Owls bounced back to win game two 10-3.

“We didn’t hit very well in the first game, but I’m glad we were able to recover and win the second game", said Coach Joan Joyce.

After four scoreless innings in game one, Marshall broke the ice when they posted a run on a fielding error. They then added a three-run homer to left field to push the score to 4-0. The Owls managed two baserunners in the bottom of the seventh as a final push but were held at bay.

The Owls got things going in the first inning of game two as Kelsey Morrison sent a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Emily Lochten. A Marshall throwing error then allowed another score.

Alex Miller kept the rally going with an RBI double making the score 3-0.

The Thundering Herd got on the board in the third inning with a RBI single, then tied the score with two more runs in the top of the fifth.

The Owls earned the lead back when Lauren Whitt singled to left field to score Morrison in the bottom half of the inning.

A Mia Olson single and Marshall error made the score 6-3. Morrison followed with a three-run blast to left to clear the bases.

Samantha Lageyre had two RBI doubles, the second one a walkoff, in FAU softball’s 4-3 win over Marshall on Sunday. The Owls are now 19-16 on the season and remain in sole possession of first place in C-USA at 7-2.

FAU took the lead in the bottom of the third when Lageyre’s first RBI double drove in Lauren Whitt for the first run of the game. Lageyre came around to score later in the inning on a Madisyn Palmer infield single to make the score 2-0.

After threatening for most of the afternoon, Marshall tied the score in the sixth on a two-run double by Grayson Radcliffe. In the eighth inning, Lageyre made a running catch in right field and appeared to double off pinch runner Samantha Loose, but the umpiring crew ruled that Loose had tagged up and safely advanced to third. The next batter, Blakely Burch, singled to right to put Marshall up 3-2.

Palmer led off the bottom of the eighth with another base hit, advanced to second on a Tatum Buckley sacrifice bunt and then knotted things up at 3-3 on Mia Olson’s single up the middle.

After Kelsey Morrison walked the leadoff batter in the ninth, Buckley relieved her in the circle and got the next three batters to end the frame. In the home half of the eighth, Whitt singled, then moved up to second on a Jolie Duffner sac bunt, setting the stage for Lageyre’s heroics.

Lageyre’s hit fell just inside the foul line in left, allowing Whitt to score and giving the Owls the win.
