Notes

Owls

Florida Atlantic will look to keep their perfect 12-0 start at home in tact against the C-USA favorite Golden Eagles.

The Owls will be coming off an emotional comeback against Miami on Wednesday night, one that saw them eclipse a 9-2 defict after five innings, as two-out grand slam by Eric Rivera capped a six-run ninth to clinch a series victory over UM for the first time since 2011 and only the third time in program history.

Rivera, already Co-C-USA Hitter of the Week for his performance in the five games prior, now has 18 RBI in his last seven games, and is hitting .560 over that span. He paces FAU with 21 RBI, tied for the third-highest mark in the league.

Not to be overlooked in the comeback to were three hits, two runs, two RBI and a home run robbery by David Miranda; two hits, two runs scored, and now a 16-game hitting streak for Tyler Frank; and a home run among two hits, two runs and two RBI for Cody Wilson.

Relief pitching was, and is still producing the opportunity for FAU to return to offensive favor. Mike Ruff and Jordan Poore combined for two innings that saw five strikeouts between them and kept the Hurricanes in check.

The Owls are receiving votes in both the Coaches Poll and the NCBWA Top 30.

Golden Eagles

After Tuesday night’s victory against Southern, SMU (15-4) has now outscored their opponents 170-78. Gabe Montenegro had a career-high night driving in four RBI off two hits and now leads the team with a .367 batting average. Luke Reynolds and Hunter Slater are close behind both with a .365 batting average and lead the team with 27 hits each.

Montenegro, Matt Wallner, Daniel Keating and LeeMarcus Boyd all had two-hit nights but the hit of the game went to Erick Hoard who launched a solo shot over the center field wall for his first home run for Southern Miss.

Nick Sandlin is expected to start for the Golden Eagles on Friday night with a 3-0 record and a 1.32 ERA. Sandlin matched a career-high with 14 strikeouts last Friday night against UTSA and earned Conference USA Pitcher of the Week and Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week honors for his performance.

Walker Powell will make his first weekend series debut on the mound for Southern Miss on Sunday. Powell (1-1, 3.50) has started all five of the midweek games for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles are ranked number 16 in the Coaches Poll but are notched at number 14 in the NCBWA Top 30.

Had to revise the projected starters…Marman is not starting Saturday, with Nowatnick getting the nod instead.

Asked why, waiting for a response…

Listen, this is baseball. Things like this happen. Our arms are deep. The next guy needs to step up and do the job. The key this weekend is putting runs on the board. Giving our arms a little room to play with. SoMiss is tough.

If we had Marman, I would feel VERY confident about winning the series - which is all we need to do.

However, I am not confident with the possibility of having to use a lot of extra pen for game two.

That leaves us very thin for game three…

They don't have great pitching aside from tonight, so lets hope it's a duke-fest we can pull out.

The Owls score first, with a homerun in the first inning by Tyler Frank, but USM has answered with solo shots in the 4th and 5th, and a two run crusher in the 6th to lead 4-1.

Three of their five hits have gone over the wall.

A sac fly from Andrew Summerall brings the Owls to within a pair of scores in their turn.

Miednik is done after six complete innings: 5H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 6K.
