Florida Atlantic baseball drops their third straight contest tonight in a concerning 7-6 road loss to Bethune Cookman.

The loss snaps a nine-game winning streak by the Owls against the Daytona foes, who won it in the bottom of the ninth after trailing 6-3 to start the final frame.

Closer Zach Schneider tossed only two outs, but gave up a total of four runs (two of which were earned) off of five hits in the loss.

David Miranda and Tyler Frank each had three hits and an RBI to pace the offense.

The Owls will continue on the road for the next four games, beginning with a three game set against Marshall on Friday night at 6:00 PM.

Ouch - meltdown in the 9th (and not just pitching), gotta nip this in the bud Coach M!

What was the meltdown other than pitching?  On pitching - Zach had been a little shaky in recent close opportunities so not totally surprising that he blew up.  But BCU is not a good team.  This was a really disappointing loss.

Unearned runs means error(s). To me means team blew it not just pitching. But a good pitcher LEARNS to put that behind them and get the next batter! The way the team has played since, looks like that is happening! Good for them!!

For the second straight season, the Florida Atlantic baseball team will host their final two midweek games of the 2018 regular season at FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, in West Palm Beach.

The Owls were 2-0 in games last year at this stadium, located at 5444 Haverhill Road in West Palm, and will play host to the same two teams this season.

On Tuesday, April 24, the opponent will be FGCU, and two weeks later, on May 8, it will be UCF. Both games will begin at 6:30 p.m., and tickets will be $12. Season ticket holders will have their tickets honored at this new location.

“We are looking forward to playing up there,” said Head Baseball Coach John McCormack. “It is a real treat for our guys to play in such a beautiful venue.”

I think if we go 3-1 or better this week, we might crack the top 25 in D1 Baseball rankings. We have the best overall record in C-USA, and tied with LA Tech (ranked 25 in D1 baseball rankings) as far as conference record.

All nine Owls' starting batters had at least one hit – towards a season-high 17 – and all scored a run or more, in No. 25 Florida Atlantic University baseball's Tuesday night rout of visiting Bethune-Cookman, 14-2.

“We did what we needed to do,” said Head Coach John McCormack. “In conference (play), sometimes these midweek games are not easy because you’re looking ahead towards the weekend, especially flying on Thursday. I thought Jordan (Poore) did a nice job in his first start, I thought Marc Stewart was really good in relief, and offensively, we were able to make some things happen and we got the ‘W,’ just get the win and move on.”

The Owls (27-9) scored first, in the first, with David Miranda doubling in Tyler Frank. Bethune-Cookman (14-23) tied it up at 1-1 in the third, and after two runs for FAU in their half of the third (a Joe Montes double scoring Frank again, and a two-out Pedro Pages single), the Wildcats cut it back to one at 3-2 in the fourth. It became a 5-2 Owl lead in the fourth after Jacob Pino and Richie Nizza singled, and both came in on a two-run double by Frank, and the offense exploded in the seventh.

Three straight singles – by Miranda, Pages and Eric Rivera – loaded the bases to start the inning, and two runs came in on a Cody Wilson double off the rightfield fence. Two pitches later, two more scored on a Gunnar Lambert single, but the inning was far from over, as Nizza doubled in Lambert and he himself scored on the relay throw and an error. Then, after a walk to Frank, Jared DeSantolo sent a 1-0 pitch into the trees in right center to complete an eight-run frame. The cherry on top came in the eighth, when Lambert launched a first-pitch homer deep to right. All the while, Owls’ pitching threw up zeroes in relief of winning pitcher Jordan Poore, improving FAU to 19-3 at home in 2018.

The Owls go west to face Conference USA’s other Owls, from Rice, this Friday-Sunday in Houston.

Florida Atlantic baseball had the tying run on base or at the plate in each of the last two innings, but couldn’t get that one key hit Wednesday night in falling 4-2 to FGCU at FAU Baseball Stadium.

FGCU (28-11) scored in the second and fourth innings, and a two-out rally by FAU (29-10-1) was snuffed out in the bottom half with just one run scoring as the bases were left loaded. In fact, at that point, two double plays by the Eagles had already erased Owl baserunners, and another would be thrown out rounding third base too far to end the fifth.

Two more FGCU runs, in the fifth and eighth, added up to a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, singles by Tyler Frank and Joe Montes to lead off the frame seemed to swing momentum back to FAU, and the bases would be loaded when Pedro Pages was walked with one out. A fielder’s choice RBI by Eric Rivera scored one run, but a flyout ended the threat. Then, in the ninth, Jordan Poore singled with two outs, but a called third strike ended the proceedings with the tying run at the plate.

“We didn’t have much energy, and didn’t have good at-bats at the beginning,” said Head Coach John McCormack. “We tried to rally (and) had some opportunities. Credit them, they made some big pitches when they had to. It was just little mistakes.”

The Owls had eight hits, but they were scattered. Montes had three of them in four at-bats.

FAU will have their three next games at FAU Baseball Stadium as well. Their next-to-last Conference USA home series of the year will be against UAB starting on Friday night. First pitch is 6:30 PM.

In a game featuring just six combined hits in the first eight frames, a walkoff single in the bottom of the 10th was the deciding run in a 2-1, 10-inning win by UCF over Florida Atlantic at John Euliano Park.

“What a good college baseball game,” said Head Coach John McCormack. “Both teams played well. You never like being on the wrong side of the scoreboard, but I am proud of the way our guys played tonight.”

Each team scored on two-out hits in the early going, but the respective starters and bullpen corps threw up zero after zero until extras. UCF (30-15) got their run in the first, with a walk, stolen base and flyout putting Ray Alejo on third, and he came in on Tyler Osik’s single.

In the FAU (30-13-1) third, Jared DeSantolo was hit by a pitch, went to second on a balk and third on a wild pitch, and was knocked in by Tyler Frank’s basehit.

With the exception of David Miranda having a home run robbed at the fence in rightfield in the fourth, and an unlucky lineout double play with Owls on the corners in the sixth, it took until the eighth for either team to truly threaten again.

Drew Peden stranded a runner at third in the UCF eighth; FAU had Joe Montes on third and Miranda on second with one out, but couldn’t score in the ninth; and in bottom of nine, UCF had a runner at third with one out, but was held off again. In the 10th, a one-out single by Kevin Abraham would be stranded, and in the home half, Osik’s second run-scoring single, with the bases loaded and nobody out, drove in the game-winner.

Conference USA play resumes this weekend, on the road against FIU, beginning Friday night at 7:00 PM.
