OwlBytes: 2019 FAU Football Fall Camp - August 15th

Post

On a steamy hot morning at the Oxley Center the Owls took the field for their 12th practice of fall camp. The Offense has looked crisp the past 2 practices, however the defense was able to cause some difficulties today.

  • Kiffin Speak As we near Saturdays second scrimmage of fall head coach Lane Kiffin was available for questions. Kiffin praised the progress of the first team offensive line. “The first unit is playing well, Brandon Walton is playing really great.” Senior WR Brandon Robinson`s leaping ability and athleticism has stood out the past few days. “He`s right up there, If you stay you play, James Charles is a great example of that.” Both Robinson and Charles have bought into the program and slowly worked their way up the depth chart instead of taking their talents elsewhere. RB James Charles is expected to see plenty of action out of the backfield this season. His entire session can be seen below.

  • The Return of DE Dalton Hustad The redshirt freshmen returned to the team this morning and participated in practice. Hustad attended nearby powerhouse Dwyer which has also produced WR Dante Cousart. While playing under HC Jack Daniels at Dwyer, Hustad was named first team all-county as a senior. With a strong end of camp Hustad could find a niche on special teams.

  • The Money Down The FAU offense struggled last season on third downs. In 2018, the Owls ranked 116th in FBS with a 33% conversion rate on third downs. The team continues to work on situational football in the days leading up to the start of the season. The addition of former Alabama Running back BJ Emmons should be beneficial in 3 and short situations.

  • Agner Remains Sidelined Lane Kiffin informed the media that QB Justin Agner did not practice today as he remains under the weather. “He had some tests medical tests done yesterday that we don’t yet have the results.” Agner was receiving first team reps earlier in camp.

  • Play of The Day FAU defensive lineman continue to show that they are more than just pass rushers and run stoppers. Today in team drills, DE Tim Bonner made a diving pass deflection on a throw intended for HB BJ Emmons from QB Chris Robison. Expect to see Bonner starting at defensive end as the team marches into Columbus for Week 1.

Diving in a bit further…

Kiffin said that he doesn't know how the format of Saturday's scrimmage will play out and will basically judge it as it comes form a tackling perspective…eluding to the fact that last weekend they tackled up until the 2:00 drill kicked in.

Would still expect to see a little more "revelation" (but not too much) from the play book.
