FAU Remembers Founding Father Jack Guistwhite (1917-2012)

He was best known as a founding father of Florida Atlantic University, but Dr. Jack Guistwhite’s accomplishments reached far beyond South Florida.

An early convert to technology, he first worked at IBM  before becoming an assistant registrar at UF, where he was responsible for machine records, systems and scheduling. He left there in June 1963 to become FAU’s first registrar.

Dr. Guistwhite, who died Monday at age 94, was the registrar at FAU when he established a national scholarship to help students with two-year community college degrees pursue bachelor degrees. Today, 735 colleges and universities in the United States, Canada and Great Britain offer $37 million in transfer scholarships, available to members of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
