UTEP Head Basketball Coach Tim Floyd, announced he is retiring after his Miners lost to Lamar 66-52 for their fifth straight loss. At the time of this post, it is unannounced as to who will take over the program at the Don Haskins Center. The Miners are currently in last place of CUSA with a 1-5 record, with the lone winning being over a DIII program.

In his seven years at UTEP, Tim Floyd never won the CUSA Tournament, but did secure four top-three regular season finishes and three post season trips.

Floyd was on the hot seat last season, when the Miners lost 12 straight, including two to arch-rival New Mexico State. The fans in El Paso were irate that the Athletic Director Bob Still (who has since retired) continue to give Floyd the vote on confidence despite their poor play. After dropping three straight to open conference play, the Miners got their first win in two months when they defeated FIU in OT. After that win, UTEP went on to finish the season 12-3, including a pair of close wins over FAU.

The Miners are without star SG Dominic Artis, who has been a thorn in the side of FAU basketball for years. Omega Harris is still UTEP's starting PG, with his funky hair and all. Therefor, Floyd cannot point to lack of senior leadership as an issue. Nor can he point to bad luck with recruiting classes, as UTEP has finished in the top five in CUSA's recruiting classes in three in the last four years, including the top class in 2015, according to 247Sports.

Nonetheless, one of CUSA (if not all of college basketball's) most storied programs surely cannot accept this type of futility any longer. This was the right move for all parties involved.
