C-USA Football: Games for Week of 11-18-17

Only two weeks remain in the 2017 regular season, but there is still plenty of excitement to come in one of Conference USA’s wildest years.

North Texas (7-3, 6-1) clinched the West Division title last week and will play in its first C-USA Championship Game on Saturday, Dec. 2. The Mean Green will step  out of conference play by hosting Army (8-2) this Saturday in Denton.  This will be the third meeting between the schools in the last 13 months, with each team owning one victory.

East-leading Florida Atlantic (7-3, 6-0) is just one win away from clinching the division and hosting the C-USA title game. Saturday night the Owls will host the annual Shula Bowl against the team that could still catch them in the division race, FIU (6-3, 4-2). A Florida Atlantic win on Saturday or at Charlotte next week will give the Owls the crown, while two FIU wins and two FAU losses will give the Panthers the division title.

On Saturday at Louisiana Tech, Florida Atlantic sophomore KR Kerrith Whyte did what had not been done in 813 prior kick returns through 201 prior games in Owls history – return a kickoff for a touchdown.  Whyte took the opening kickoff of the second half back 98 yards for a score to extend FAU’s lead to 27-9 in a game they would go on to win, 48-23, for the Owls sixth straight victory.

This week’s action actually begins Friday night with the renewal of the longest-running rivalry in C-USA when Middle Tennessee (5-5, 3-3) makes the 100-mile trip up to Bowling Green to face WKU (5-5, 3-3). The winner will reach bowl-eligibility.

Leading off Saturday’s schedule will be Rice at Old Dominion (4-6, 2-4), with the Monarchs needing to win their final two contests to gain bowl-eligibility for the second straight year.

Southern Miss (6-4, 4-2) will welcome Charlotte for the second straight season as the Golden Eagles try to reach at least seven wins for the 18th time since Conference USA began football in 1996.

Injuries and tough luck in close losses have found Louisiana Tech (4-6, 2-4) needing to win its final two games to become bowl-eligible for the fourth straight season. The Bulldogs will try to take one step towards that mark at UTEP.

Marshall (7-3, 4-2) will make its first trip to San Antonio to face UTSA (5-4, 2-4).  The Thundering Herd are on their way to a bowl for the fourth time in five years, while the hard-luck Roadrunners can reach six wins with a victory. UTSA’s four losses have come by an average of 4.3 points and all by less than a touchdown.

UAB (7-3, 5-2) will play the other non-conference tilt, as  the Blazers will visit a Florida squad (3-6) that has dropped four games in a row and already changed coaches.

Can you believe only 10-3 through 3 quarters!!!! So WKU bowl eligible (7 from CUSA now!) and MTSU needs to beat ODU (ODU hosts Rice today which should put them a 5-6) next week which in now an elimination game as each has 6 losses!

By the way Buffalo won the other night putting them at 5-6 with a game hosting Ohio left. The Buffalo loss not looking as bad now at least!

WIN TODAY OWLS!!!!!! Oh, not you Rice! :Big-Grin:

Buffalo lost some really close games. One game in 7 OT’s, and a couple other within 3 points. No excuse we should have ever lost that game. Who knows maybe woke the team up for the rest of the season

The Thundering Herd offense was anything but that on Saturday, but did manage a touchdown.

The Roadrunners cash in on three field goals for the win, which makes the bowl eligible at 6-4.
