C-USA Football: Games for Week of 10-6-18

Five conference games are on this week’s schedule in Conference USA Football, beginning with a key East Division showdown on Friday night.

Middle Tennessee will visit Marshall, the second straight year that these foes have met on a Friday evening. The Thundering Herd has won three of the last four in this series and will be on their home field looking for a 2-0 start in league play, as will the Blue Raiders. Middle Tennessee’s last two victories against Marshall were thrillers (a 51-49 triumph in 2013 and an overtime victory in 2015).

All of Saturday’s action will take place in the evening, beginning with Old Dominion at Florida Atlantic. The visiting team has won all four previous meetings in the series, as the Owls look to extend their eight-game winning streak at FAU Stadium.

West Division rivals UAB and Louisiana Tech face off in Ruston.  Last year’s game meeting was a thriller, with the Blazers blocking a potential game-winning field goal on the final play to earn a 23-22 win for their first-ever win over the Bulldogs. LA Tech just pulled off a similar feat last Saturday, handing North Texas its first defeat of 2018, sealed with a blocked kick on the final play.

North Texas looks to rebounds from that tough loss to Louisiana Tech as it gets ready for a trip to UTEP. Though the Mean Green offense was slowed down last week, it continues to lead C-USA and ranks 13th in the FBS with a 44.4 scoring average per game.

A south Texas rivalry is renewed when Rice hosts UTSA in what has been a traditionally low scoring matchup. The Owls are back at Rice Stadium for the first time since Sept. 1 as they take on a Roadrunners squad that is looking to extend their winning streak to three.

Continuing the upset parade, the Blue Raiders finish ahead of the spread for the second straight week. This time in more profound notion.

Yup - beat 'em at Marshall too. Was actually hoping for a Marshall win as MTSU has to lose 2 games in conference for us to get to the Champ game!

Should give us a better feeling going up with Marshall though, they are not that good with wins over only Miami (OH) by 7, FCS E. Kentucky by 16 and WKU by 3 for a combined 26 points. Again, NO wins over a team the caliber of Air Force.

But FIRST we have to win this week vs. ODU for that to matter  - GO OWLS!

Now we have to obviously win, but be big fans of FIU against MTSU next week.  Looking at their schedule, they don't have major tests left.  The FAU implosion last week is shaping up to be a big deal in the conference race since MTSU doesn't play teams like LaTech or UNT.

Yeah but hard to worry about that right now. We lost our first conference contest and we're struggling in games. This doesn't look like a CUSA championship team right now.

It could be a bowl team though. I'd wager most still think six wins are possible given our remaining schedule.

But considering that CUSA is completely unpredictable right now, who knows.
