Pointing to Cristobal's record isn't fair.  He took over the worst program in the nation and won 2 straight bowl games…and he wanted to stay there.  I don't think he's a great game day coach, but he's a great recuiter.  FIU did Pelini and crew a big favor.

They were invited to two bowl games. They lost one of them.

Sorry…I mis-typed!  ;D

You need an avatar my friend…….

You've been on the site 10 YEARS and have no avatar!

;D

Tell me what you want and we'll hook it up?

Re: Ron Turner -next FIU HC

Granted, their AD is clearly mismanaging their sports teams and if I was an FIU fan, I'd be pretty enraged too. At a time when the Sun Belt is able to attract some pretty great coaches (usually SEC assistants) and go to bowl games the very next season, this hire certainly feels underwhelming. Not that a person can't learn from their mistakes but on paper this guy seems like a definite gamble.

We'll see how this shakes out.

The no Florida ties argument needs to be put to rest…Howard had no high school ties in Florida before U of M, neither did Jimmy Johnson, nor Dennis Erickson.  They only racked up 4 national championships among them.  What you need is an ability to network.  When you meet someone they either like you or they don't.  Most people don't like A-holes.

Your comparing high school recruiting from 30 years ago to today?  Are you serious?

I don't know what post that you read, but I made no comparison of recruiting today and 30 years ago…infer what you want.  But, if you think a recruit looks at a coach who is recruiting him and says…gee he's not from Florida I am not going there.  I think you are wrong.  Recruits care about the system being run, the pesonality of the coach doing the recruiting, and sometimes the school!  And ties get quickly made.  If you have a high school coach who is holding a kid back from a division 1 scholarship, then the coach needs to look in the mirror and ask why he is in coaching?  For his ego or to help make a kid a better person.

Urban Meyer had no ties to Florida before going to UF…he did OK, not great, but OK.

I'm not talking about the kids.  I'm talking about the coaches.  South Florida HC's are prima donnas.  It's hard enough to get the best programs down here to send kids to lesser known schools.  I'm not saying it cannot be done, I'm saying it will be much harder.

Petrino will get more face time immediately at these schools than Pelini or Turner will because the coaches down here KNOW he's the goods.  Reputation AND relationships go a long way.

More on him…

Former head coach at Illinois, where he went:

35–57 overall, and 20–44 in league action.

***cricket sounds***

In his defense, he did post a 10-2, 7-1 mark in 2001…….

So the rest of his time there he went 25-55? WOW thats impressive! And he is 59 and has been out of college football for 8 years. Very interesting hire to me, to put it VERY nicely!

Re: Ron Turner -next FIU HC

Turner might workout ok. If he is being judged on his performance at Illinois, that might be misleading. Illinois is not a consistent team. I looked up the 100 year history of the football team. They have a few good seasons mixed with many losing seasons. He did have some success at UI. I don't follow UI football and neither do most people I know up here. It's all "da Bears". I see many more people wanting to get season tickets to Illini basketball.

A former Big 10 coach might have some success at the mid major level. Who knows.

If there are any comparisons between Pelini and Turner, just remember, Pelini really wanted the job. He drew up a plan and showed it to Angelos. He really wanted to coach here.  Enthusiasm and dedication count for a lot.

Re: Ron Turner -next FIU HC

Ron Turner is a clean hire with no baggage or controversy. Also, no bang for the buck. He is more an NFL guy than a college coach.

Also of interest…he played at Diablo Valley and finished his career at Pacific University with 666 yards receiving.

Did FIU make a deal with the devil?

FIU: Sources tell me Vigor High School (AL) assistant Derrick Crudup is a strong candidate to join the FIU staff. In addition, sources tell me Stanford offensive quaility control Morgan Turner has not yet accepted a position under his father, but if he were to do so at some point, Turner would coach the tight ends.
