Pointing to Cristobal's record isn't fair. He took over the worst program in the nation and won 2 straight bowl games…and he wanted to stay there. I don't think he's a great game day coach, but he's a great recuiter. FIU did Pelini and crew a big favor.
They were invited to two bowl games. They lost one of them.
Sorry…I mis-typed! ;D

The no Florida ties argument needs to be put to rest…Howard had no high school ties in Florida before U of M, neither did Jimmy Johnson, nor Dennis Erickson. They only racked up 4 national championships among them. What you need is an ability to network. When you meet someone they either like you or they don't. Most people don't like A-holes.
Your comparing high school recruiting from 30 years ago to today? Are you serious?

I don't know what post that you read, but I made no comparison of recruiting today and 30 years ago…infer what you want. But, if you think a recruit looks at a coach who is recruiting him and says…gee he's not from Florida I am not going there. I think you are wrong. Recruits care about the system being run, the pesonality of the coach doing the recruiting, and sometimes the school! And ties get quickly made. If you have a high school coach who is holding a kid back from a division 1 scholarship, then the coach needs to look in the mirror and ask why he is in coaching? For his ego or to help make a kid a better person.
Urban Meyer had no ties to Florida before going to UF…he did OK, not great, but OK.

I'm not talking about the kids. I'm talking about the coaches. South Florida HC's are prima donnas. It's hard enough to get the best programs down here to send kids to lesser known schools. I'm not saying it cannot be done, I'm saying it will be much harder.
Petrino will get more face time immediately at these schools than Pelini or Turner will because the coaches down here KNOW he's the goods. Reputation AND relationships go a long way.

More on him…
Former head coach at Illinois, where he went:
35–57 overall, and 20–44 in league action.
***cricket sounds***
In his defense, he did post a 10-2, 7-1 mark in 2001…….
So the rest of his time there he went 25-55? WOW thats impressive! And he is 59 and has been out of college football for 8 years. Very interesting hire to me, to put it VERY nicely!

A former Big 10 coach might have some success at the mid major level. Who knows.
If there are any comparisons between Pelini and Turner, just remember, Pelini really wanted the job. He drew up a plan and showed it to Angelos. He really wanted to coach here. Enthusiasm and dedication count for a lot.

Also of interest…he played at Diablo Valley and finished his career at Pacific University with 666 yards receiving.
Did FIU make a deal with the devil?

Miami (FL): Keep an eye on Mario Cristabal for the wide receivers job under Al Golden.
