GAME THREAD: Miami vs FAU - 4/4/18

Who:  FAU (20-8) at Miami (12-15)

When: Wednesday, 4/4 @ 6:00 PM

Projected Starters

MIA - RHP Daniel Federman (1-2, 1.51)
FAU - RHP Mark Nowatnick (1-2, 3.00)

Notes

Coming off this weekend’s sweep of Conference USA foe Marshall, the Owls (20-8, 6-3 C-USA) earned a No. 29 ranking in the latest NCBWA poll, and are also receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches poll.

FAU has taken the first two matchups this season against the Hurricanes, winning 5-4 in Boca Raton on Feb. 28, and two weeks ago, clinching the yearly series with a come-from-behind victory in Coral Gables.

This year marks the 15th time that the Owls and Hurricanes have faced off at least three times in regular season play. Only twice prior has FAU won two-of-three, in 1983 and 2011, and the Owls have never beaten Miami three times in a year.

The Owls’ leading hitter through 28 games is Joe Montes at .342. He is 13th in C-USA in batting average, and tied for seventh with 39 hits. Tyler Frank is in the midst of a 23-game hitting streak and is at .330 overall. He slots seventh among league hitters with a .458 on-base percentage, and is fourth with 30 runs scored. His eight home runs leads the team and is second in the conference.

Miami (12-15, 6-6 ACC) has dropped their last four, including a most recent in-conference road sweep at the hands of Georgia Tech.

Miami’s probable starter is another righthander, freshman Daniel Federman. In 12 outings, with three starts, he is 1-2 with a 1.51 ERA, with 32 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings. He has appeared in both games against FAU, in relief the first time around (1 2/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts) and starting in Coral Gables (six innings, six hits, three runs/two earned runs, two walks, five strikeouts).

Isaac Quinones and Willy Escala are the Hurricanes’ two top hitters, at .364 and .333, respectively. Romy Gonzalez and Michael Perez each have two home runs (towards the team’s nine), and Gonzalez has 12 RBI, one more than Quinones and Michael Burns.

FAU Baseball SWEEPS canes for first time ever!

Coming off the heels of a three game slide, the Owls have now won four in a row heading into this weekend's series against Charlotte.

Middle relievers Jordan Poore and Weston Clemente combined for four scoreless frames with just three hits tonight to protect the lead, and Clemente struck out the Miami side in the 8th.

Tyler Frank ties FAU's all-time record for consecutive games with a hit by registering a double in the first inning and has now hit in 24 straight contests, equaling Kevin Connacher's program mark set back in 1994.

Great job on the field and by Coach Mac. He knows how to handle this pitching staff.  Great hitting Charlotte coming to Boca for the weekend.

Definitely a long time coming! With how badly their season is going, I almost feel bad for UM.
