Arkansas State Evens Series

One day after picking up a big series-opening win over Arkansas State University, the Owls of Florida Atlantic University were routed 11-4 Saturday in Jonesboro.

Arkansas State (20-28; 10-16 Sun Belt) touched up FAU starter Ahmed Garcia for four runs in the first inning and never looked back. The Red Wolves scored three more times in the second and added four more in the third to assume an 11-2 lead.

Whoever wins tomorrow's series finale will position themselves within striking distance of the league's eighth and final playoff spot heading into the last weekend of play Thursday through Saturday May 14-16. Florida Atlantic (26-22; 9-16 Sun Belt) will be searching for its first Sunday victory in league play.

Murray Watts hit his team-leading 41st RBI for the Red Wolves in the first inning and Brandon Eller hit a 2-RBI triple. Garcia would not make it out of the second, allowing a leadoff double to the No. 9 hitter Jordan Kimball and hitting Derrick Coleman before being lifted in favor of junior Barry Rooks.

Garcia (3-2) was charged with six runs and ASU would lead 7-2 heading into the third. Rooks would fair no better. Todd Baumgartner hit a 3-run homerun in the ASU third, one of six hits off Rooks forcing FAU head coach John McCormack to use a third pitcher to try and complete three innings.

In the mean time ASU starter Andy Ferguson (4-5) benefited from the run support, pitching with a huge lead he struck out seven in eight complete innings, cruising to his fourth win. At one point Ferguson retired nine straight FAU batters and 17 of 18.

William Block continues his assault on the FAU record books, having already set new school records for runs (214) and doubles (55), he is now just five shy of establishing a new FAU benchmarks for RBI and homeruns. Block hit a two-run homer in the second inning.

Sunday's game time has been moved up to 12:30PM EST due to the chance of afternoon rain in the Jonesboro area.
