BASKETBALL: Gavin Lugood?

I put the new recruits name into yahoo and apparently this kid was a huge deal coming out of high school. He was set to go to Southern Ill and recruited by a bunch of top 25 teams but didn't have the grades. This guy running the court with Mike Bell, Pierre Tucker, Kahleaf Watson with a open guard position availble too, we actually could be a great team. Someone just needs to tell Sydney Green to come down from the high horse of going to the tourney two years ago and remember to coach when the game is on the line.

Here are some quotes:

5/16/01: "In announcing the signing of Gavin Ludgood to a national letter of intent, Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's basketball coach Bruce Weber straddled the fence of hype on both sides. "I would think numbers-wise and notoriety-wise, other than Kent (Williams) since I've been here, this is the biggest potential name we've signed," said Weber of the 6-8, 240-pound Clarksville, Ark. high school product, who officially put his name on the dotted line Tuesday. - Southern Illiniosan.com

1/01: moved to inactive - mdr

9/29: "a powerful 6-7, 240 pound power forward from Clarksville H.S. in Clarksville, Ark., has had a number of programs express interest in him this fall. Ludgood started out the summer at the adidas ABCD Camp, and had a solid summer playing for the Arkansas Angels program. Ludgood said he is planning an official visit to Virginia Tech for the Hokies' football game against Syracuse, and is also interested in Illinois, Ole Miss, Marquette, Southern Illinois, SW Missouri State, TCU, UAB and Tennessee Martin. Ludgood will take an unofficial visit to Tenn-Martin on Oct. 7 with some of his Angels teammates, but his current top six includes Virginia Tech, Illinois, Marquette, SW Missouri State, TCU and UAB. Ludgood averaged 19 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks per contest as a junior at Clarksville H.S. He said he has a 2.5 GPA and has already achieved a qualifying score on the ACT. He is not sure if he will sign early or late." - AllStar Report

7/28: "Ludgood is a big, strong presence in the paint. He's active on the boards and likes to bang. He's still a little raw offensively and has a tough legacy to live up to ? Corliss Williamson, the last big star from Arkansas. Ludgood said he has a 2.5 GPA and scored a 19 on the ACT. He played traveling basketball with the Arkansas Angels this summer. Among the schools showing interest include Arkansas, Arkansas-Little Rock, Kansas, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Rutgers, Marquette, Saint Louis, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana Tech and South Alabama. He's already taken an unofficial visit to Arkansas. He also would like to play college basketball with traveling teammate Antario Glover of Stephens High in Arkansas." - FoxSports

4/15: "Juniors showcase talent at AAO. NW Arkansas Morning News.
Gavin Ludgood isn?t as concerned about where he is rated, or in some cases not rated, as he is improving his individual game and earning a scholarship. The 6-foot-8, 240-pound Ludgood is among the 53 athletes participating in this weekend?s AAO Top 25 Camp at Fayetteville High School. Ludgood was rated among the top underclassmen in the state by the Arkansas Recruiting Report in the March issue and some other national services are beginning to rate him pretty high. Ludgood knows a camp such as the AAO Top 25 can only help him gain more exposure. ?I know pretty much everybody here,? Ludgood said. ?I just want to go out and play hard. I want to show everyone I can play Division I basketball.? Why does Ludgood feel that one newspaper in Arkansas has chosen to not even list him among the Top 10 players in the junior class? ?It?s all about politics,? Ludgood said. ?Everybody has an opinion. I?ve been rated everywhere from No. 1 to No. 15. I intend to come out and prove that I?m one of, if not, the best juniors in the state of Arkansas.? Fortunately for Ludgood, the major colleges are aware of him and have been actively recruiting him for a long period. ?I?ve pretty well narrowed it down to six or seven colleges right now,? Ludgood said. ?I am looking at Arkansas strongly. I also like Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Tulsa and Missouri.? Ludgood isn?t shy when it comes to talking about the Razorbacks and admits there?s a strong possibility he may end up at Fayetteville. ?Joe Johnson and I played AAU basketball together for several years,? Ludgood said. ?I was in a lower age division than him, but we played for the same team. I have a pretty good relationship with Carl Baker and I know his sister. I?m friends with Carl?s family. I really like Coach (Nolan) Richardson.? Ludgood plays AAU basketball with Ozark?s Cody Tedford, Fort Smith Northside?s Matt Jones, Clarksville?s George Tate and Finlay Brashears. ?AAU basketball is hard,? Ludgood said. ?Some people say it?s tougher than high school basketball, but I?m on a pretty solid team. AAU helps all of us get noticed by even more college coaches.? Ludgood also intends to attend some national camps with the idea of gaining exposure and improving his game as well. ?I will be at the Adidas ABCD Camp this summer,? Ludgood said. ?I worked hard to get ready for this camp and to play this summer at various camps. Hopefully I can prove to everybody I?m the real deal.? Ludgood got off to a good start doing that Friday night by scoring 25 points in two games, including 16 in his second game of the evening.

3/1/00 - Described as a "combo" forward, Gavin is averaging 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks per game. Gavin has a 2.5 GPA and has not taken the SAT or ACT exam yet. Is interested in Cincinnati. - unknown source

10/16/99: "One key name possibly in the future for the Razorbacks is Clarksville?s 6-8 junior forward Gavin Ludgood. Ludgood attended Friday?s ?Midnight Madness? and participated in the slam-dunk event." - NW Arkansas "The Morning News" (nwamorningnews.com)

9/25/00: "Ludgood will likely be one of the major sleepers to emerge from the South in the coming year. A powerful athlete, Ludgood has already broken two backboards with his thunder dunks"
Participated in the adidas Gym Rat Midnite Madness, playing on the same court as TJ Ford, Dan Ewing and Kelvin Torbert.
