BOCA RATON ? Assistant men's basketball coach Rex Walters will become Florida Atlantic's next head coach, according to sources.
Walters will replace Matt Doherty, who took the head coaching job at Southern Methodist on Monday.
Florida Atlantic interviewed Walters on Wednesday.
Walters was Doherty's first hire when Doherty became the Owls' head coach in April 2005. Before coming to FAU, Walters spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Valparaiso University under Homer Drew.
When reached by cellphone, Walters had no comment about the coaching situation.
Walters led Kansas to a two-year mark of 56-12 and a pair of Big Eight championships. He was the No. 16 overall selection in the 1993 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets. He played his first two seasons with the Nets before going to Philadelphia, where he played two seasons under Larry Brown. He finished his NBA career playing three seasons with the Miami Heat under Pat Riley.

I'll rest easier when it is official. This should make for some big press.
After the announcement it is going to get even more interesting because you know Angelos had to have thought of a supporting cast. Interesting huh!

What I like about the hire is, we get continuity at a time we need some stability for the program. Plus Walters showed he wants to be here - this will help make our transition to the SBC much easier. How much pressure will he be in as we move to a much tougher conference? Are the W's going to be the only guide we measure Walters success in the short term? I would like to think that we give him enough time to prove himself and judge him on the overall prefromance of buildng this program - Walters walks in a very unique situation as a coach with no expereince, in that he also has to build a program beyond the court and dressing room.
Good Luck Rex 8-)
