FAU's New Coach

Let's put our minds together to see how close we can come to the actual decision.

I don't know that Sydney Green option with his son looks pretty enticing ;), for me its between Rex or a named coach looking to retire. But thank god I don't have to pick the new coach cause I don't know jack about coaches.

Ha ha, I was waiting for someone to suggest Sydney! I want Rex, or Stan Van Gundy, but in all seriousness, Rex better be the the guy. He's too valuable to lose. IMO anyway.

The program won't loose too much momentum or any at all with Rex in charge.

I think FAU might have a Billy Donovan in the making. He has been in some well coached programs.

Funny thing is that if Sidney were to have brought his son, Taurean, to FAU he would still be the head coach. Taurean in 10th grade was better than the FAU point guards. He was way better than Mctyre and Kahleaf Watson who Sidney had last year. Both of them sucked and it cost FAU a good season and Green his job.

Green did right by his son and allowed him to go to a program where he would flourish. Doherty comes in and upgrades the guard position, puts Mctyre on the bench where he clearly belonged & Watson flunks out, and winds up with a few more wins and a $600 K job.

I don't know that I would automatically hand over the keys to the arena to Rex. I hope they do an extensive search and find the best coach for the job. Based on the articles today, it certainly sounds like Angelos is looking to make another high profile hire. He says that the job was already drawing interest before Doherty announced his decision and his phone is ringing left and right If this is the case you can't just give the job to Walters. It could turn out that Rex is the right choice and if he is, great. I personally like the guy too, but you also have to remember he has never been a head coach at any level and has only been coaching a couple of years. So we'll have to see what happens. This coaching search is a big next step for the program. Angelos knows that to keep the interest in the team growing he has to make an impact hiring, but at the same time he has to make sure he gets a coach that Will be here for more than a few seasons. It's an interesting balance.

As of now, the two names that I've heard that interest me most are Rex and Van Gundy(who may or may not be interested in the job). Rex because he seems like he really wants to be here and see this thing through. Van Gundy because he does bring a higher profile and is an excellent basketball coach. I can't wait to see where this goes.

I vote for Rex. If he doesn't get the job, he's gone to join MD at SMU. That will result in losing some players. So, after taking a giant leap forward the program will take a few giant leaps back. We saw what a big name has done to benefit the program, but we have also seen what could very likely happen again, which would be even more devastating. Rex is chomping at the bit to be a HC, I believe he would be committed to staying for the long haul and build on the foundation in place, the players have established a relationship with him, he would be more affordable than a Van Gundy or other "high profile" candidate. It seems to me that the HC position at FAU would be the ideal place for a first year HC as opposed to another MD who would be enticed by more appealing offers. And with RW's resume I have to agree with his statement, "I'm confident and hopeful they realize I'm the best candidate."

I'm not sold on an NBA coach. I believe there is less coaching in the NBA than college and having Shaq makes things a little easier in the win column. Was Van Gundy ever a head coach besides with the Heat?

I believe that Rex Walters is the best coach for the job. He was a great player and comes very very highly recommended. I understand Angelos should look into other candidates, but he would be a fool it he doesn't hire Walters for the job. He was a superstar in college and a ton of abililty to coach and take this team to the next level. What's another "big hire" going to get us?…another Sidney Green? He was our first big hire and we all know the number of Wins and Losses and Losses and Losses he had.

Van Gundy was a college head coach prior to joining the Heat at Wisconsin. He was the coach for the Badgers when Michael Finley was there. He has college experience and recently took a job as an adviser to the St. Thomas University basketball program who is bringing back a team. So that shows he is still interested in the college game. He could have had any number of pro jobs, but has chosen to stay in the area and be close to family. He is a very good coach with an excellent knowledge of the game.

You are wrong when you say his success was due to having Shaq. The year before the Shaq trade, he lead a very young team to the 2nd round of the NBA playoffs after Riley stepped down 4 days before the season. He is a good candidate because he is high profile, popular in the community, and is a local guy that would most likely stick around. That said, I don't even know for certain that he is interested in the job. I would have no problem at all with Rex being named head coach, but they should explore all possibilities first.
