FAU vs. Campbell

why are you guys bitching about doherty getting fired up? Who the hell cares. Let this guy do his job. I don't care if he's throwing chairs across the court just as long as he's; winning games, recruits, crowded stands, espn documentary's, leading the A-Sun, increasing donations, pushing for the dome.

Maybe we should get Sidney back so he can fill out ball boy applications on the sidelines during games so everyone on this message board can calm down and not worry about a coach who really cares about winning and bringing this school to the next level.

quit your crying.

Yes he has fire. It is that fire that got him in trouble at UNC. A few members of the UNC team turned on him and threatened to transfer than play for him. A few did transfer. What do you think happened that basketball players transfered from UNC.

He just has to be careful and control his emotions or history might repeat itself.

As you can read in the news articles, that is the one thing about Doherty the spot lights are shining on. All the sports reporters are looking to see how he is handling himself now at the new job.

There is a saying; "there is no such thing as bad publicity". I'm not sure that applies here.
I'm sure a lot of high school basketball players read the newspaper and sports illustrated.

Would anyone here want to play for Bobby Knight?

Doherty is putting too much pressure on himself. He knows the whole country is looking at his comeback attempt and his pride is pushing him to make sure he succeeds.

I'm not saying he shouldn't be careful, I'm just saying that I haven't seen or heard anything that tells me he hasn't. One incident of kicking a chair in the midst of a game is not indicative of his overall personality or coaching job up to this point. I've been to four home games so far this year and haven't seen anything but a coach trying to motivate his team. None of us here witness the chair kick. I say give him the benefit of the doubt.

I'm just showing some concern. When he kicked the chair, the press was all over it. Whe he lost his temper at one of the players, the press made a big deal out of it. If another coach did those things it wouldn't get mentioned. He is under a magnifying glass right now. I am also hoping he learned from his mistakes.

Matt has the fire and desire these players need to win. They seem to be responding to his intensity. As Illinoisowl is saying, the unfortunate part is that the media is ragging on his past in UNC! But we all know the media likes conflicts and controversy. I'm sure that ESPN will have a piece on their show about his past in UNC too. If someone else had motivated or did whatever they say he did in Campbell it may not even be a big deal. It's all about perception.

If Tim Duncan went into the stands instead of Ron Artest, would it have made that much press? Probably not. But because of Ron's past history it was even more magnified.

The media need to give the man a shot at getting this team over the hump. I doubt if you will see any of the players complaining about his desire to win. Half of these kids don't even know who he was or when he played! But they will get their info from the media and surrounding outlets.

he doesn't come across as a violent person, that's what kind of temper shift we would have to be worried about. i've said it before, as have many others, it's passion, he actually cares, hopefully it's about fau and not more about rebuilding his name though I'm sure thats part of it. Finally, what's wrong with yelling at these guys, from what I've seen some of the players act like punks, he should yell at them.
If I played basketball, and had the chance to play for Bobby Knight, I'd be there in a heartbeat, and it seems like there are plenty of other players that feel that way too.

You seen how many of his current and former players rallied around Knight when his ship was sinking!
Even Isiah Thomas spoke on his behalf!

As for Matt? If he's not physically abusing the players then the yelling is a part of the game. Some players can take it and some can't.

But it is a new breed of players out there on the new millennium.

you know what? I still don't care. Kick and scream as much as you want. Were having one of the best seasons ever. Were getting some legit recruits coming in and people are taking notice.

Coach Doherty admits the mistakes he made UNC and is older and wiser now. You guy are just looking for something to cry about.

My only complaint is the school didn't hire Doherty earlier.

Coach D. if you ever happen to read this, keep on doing what your doing.

We're all fans here. Who's crying? Who's complaining? Nobody said they didn't like Matt's sytle. We are discussing the media's perspective on what THEY are looking at.

Maybe you should write the local papers and ask them why they are focusing on his past.

There was a lot more then him having a bad temper that got him fired from UNC - even if it was part of the problem, you don't fix it my taking one course and all is good it does take time, being back in the mix of things can have an elevate certain reactions. As far as i'm concern as long as it's control I have no problem with it, he is a very emotional type of coach and wears it on his shelves and may rub some people the wrong way.

I like what I see from Doherty - Heart, Passion and a lot of Desire to win. All these charateristic will rub off on the players and bring them to compete at a higher level then ever before - Doherty expect 110% from his players. The difference he brings is night and day from the previous years.

I like having Matt "Fired Up" Doherty as our coach more than Sidney "Fat, Ralaxed, Lazy" Green. At least Doherty calls plays, i almost walked out of FAU games with Sidney as the coach because his lack of coahing ability was obvious. Many times the game would come down to a last second shot, he'd call a timeout, pretend to draw a play, then we'd be unable to even get a shot off. I think he played tic-tack-toe on his playboard in his timeouts instead of drawing a play. Sidney was always interested in other coaching jobs anyways. maybe he should of concentrated on the one he had.
