FIU will face rival for survival in SBC tourney

When the Golden Panthers dropped the final series of the regular season against the Florida Atlantic Owls, the Panthers were able to finish the regular season with a win and shift their focus to the Sun Belt Conference tournament.

But now, in the second round of the tournament, the Golden Panthers are forced to once again face their eighth seeded rivals in Troy, Ala.

The Golden Panthers will try to avoid elimination against the same Owls team that took two out of three games against them just one week ago.

The Owls were able to reach the postseason because of those two wins against FIU and a Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns win over New Orleans, who was tied with FAU.

Both teams lost their opening round games in the tournament, but one team still has the chance to survive.

The Owls lost 12-2 in the seventh inning vs. No. 1 seed Middle Tennessee University due to the 10-run mercy rule. The Panthers were able to finish their contest against Louisiana, but lost 11-3. Recap of the game

Starting pitcher Tom Ebert will face the Owls. Ebert was selected to the second All-Sun Belt team. He finished the season with a 6-4 record and a 3.74 ERA.

When Ebert pitched vs. the Owls on May 14, he lasted five innings and coughed up seven runs (six earned); he also gave up ten hits.

The Golden Panthers offense mustered just three runs in the opening game, but they averaged 8.5 run per game. However, the Owls offense did not fall far behind this past season scoring seven runs per game.

Even though the Golden Panthers outscored the Owls 36-23 during the three-game series, they still lost two of the three games.

Tyler Townsend belted three home runs during the series.

One concern for the Golden Panthers is the playing field of Riddle-Pace Field, which features dirt on the pitching mound only. The batter's box and infield is all grass.

Against the Ragin' Cajuns, the Golden Panthers made four errors. Head coach Turtle Thomas said the team does not make excuses, but the defense will have to make adjustments.

"There obviously were a couple plays that the surface had an affect on," coach Thomas said. "The surface probably does play a little bit of a factor, bit but the bottom line when you get seven hits and three runs, we've got to hit the ball a little better."

During the semester – especially during football season – I remember that they had as many as three people writing about sports. They had one guy (edwin bear? something like that) who was doing an "FAU sports blog" but he updated infrequently and wrote more broadly about sports, so you'd get an FAU update only here and there. He didn't keep up with it like Jay Warman did. I know there may still be some "Jay sucks!" sentiment floating around here but the dude did an awesome job covering FAU sports.

Your blog guy does a pretty good job covering FAU sports. He seems like he busts his tail, going above and beyond.

He's take a few potshots at Middle Tennessee, but he does a heckuva job for FAU.
