Cajun pitchers silence Florida International Owls
Florida International's vaunted bats not worth a hoot against UL's Moody, Pilgreen

S.L. Huter
Sports Correspondent

A team batting average of .359, 47 homeruns, an impresssive road win over Oklahoma State and two one-run losses to perennial powers Nebraska and Rice on the road?
Cajun pitchers Hunter Moody and Matt Pilgreen were not impressed with Florida Atlantic's gaudy offensive numbers, limiting the visitors to eight hits, only one for extra bases in UL's 5-2 win over the Owls, giving Coach Tony Robichaux his 700th career win at Tigue Moore field Saturday.

Moody, a lefty junior from Clinton, scattered seven singles and walked only one Owl batter in seven consistent innings, surrendering only two runs, the first when he hit left fielder Robbie Widlansky with a pitch with two outs in the sixth inning. Widlansky later scored on a single by centerfielder Daniel Cook to cut the Cajuns' lead to 2-1 and the second in the very next inning when second baseman Daniel Bomback drove home first baseman Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg to knot the score at two.

Spanjer-Furstenburg's first collegiate at bat earlier this season produced a bases loaded homerun against Mississippi Valley State.
Pilgren, meanwhile, was much the same as he has been in every appearance this season, giving up a leadoff single to the first batter he faced in Owl left fielder Mike McKenna on a 1-1 slider, before retiring six in a row including back-to-back strikeouts of FAU's five and six hole hitters, Cook and dh Tyler Stevens.

"When two good teams play you feel a little like you have to play a perfect game," Robichaux commented. "We didn't play that perfect game, but they made more mistakes and we were able to take advantage of them."

ULL shortstop Devon Bourque led off the bottom of the seventh with a four pitch walk from FAU reliever Alex Pepe, who promptly wild pitched him to second before Josh Logan, the offensive star of Friday night's win, sacrificed him to third with only one out. After a strikeout it looked like Pepe would get out of the inning with the knotted score in tact.

That was before he tried to come up and in on the Cajuns' Jefferies Tatford on an 0-1 count.

The Cajuns added to the safe total with two runs on four hits, including their only extra base hit of the day in the last half of frame eight. Jonathan Lucroy led off the inning with a single followed by DH Scott Hawkins'. After Lucroy scored on a wild pitch by Pepe, first baseman Justin Robichaux singled home Hawkins for the final run.

Pilgren, less than two years after Tommy John surgery, was again stellar in his relief effort.

"We have reached a point where we can trust him," Robichaux commented of Pilgren's effort. "We put him in there with the game on the line because we wanted to give McKenna who was two for three at that point a different look and because we have confidence in matt's ability to get us the outs that we need."

Lefty Brent Solich is the probable starter for this afternoon's game as the Cajuns seek the sweep.

On behalf of the all the Cajun faithful, I'd like to apologize for that. Our normal beat writer for the local paper was away covering the Louisiana Open. Apparently, the guy who was covering the game is an idiot. There has been some discussion about this article at raginpagin.com. We thought it was very disrespectful to FAU and its fans.

How can a reporter simply not read the press materials in front of his face? And very poor editing.

Well at least beating FAU still counts for something-UL-Lafayette moved into the polls this week after their sweep of us.

Personally at this point Im going to root for them now that they dont play us anymore because It will be good for the SunBelt to have a team as high up in the rankings as possible. Of course if we somehow get back into the regular season title race that may change but unfortunately at 2-7 in conference the regular season title is looking pretty out of reach.

Not to defend the reporter, but usually the reporter writes the story and submits it, and then some idiot slaps a headline on it. If the guy writes a lot of articles, he wouldn't necessarily go online and check the headline.

That does make sense because if you look at the original article, the info in the body of the story is correct. Only the headline is wrong.
