Gipson’s Pitching Gem Lifts FAU Past Cincinnati 3-0

Junior right-hander Mike Gipson scattered two hits in seven shutout innings as the Florida Atlantic University baseball team beat the University of Cincinnati 3-0 to pick up its first victory of the season on Saturday at the FAU Baseball Stadium in Boca Raton.

Gipson struck out four batters and allowed just four base runners to post his first victory of the season and the Owls’ first shutout since the 2007 season when the team knocked off Florida International University 5-0.  FAU also held the Bearcats to three hits on the afternoon – the fewest number of hits allowed in a nine-inning game since Mickey Storey’s no-hit pitching performance against Campbell in 2006.

The Owls got things started early as junior Dan Scheffler drove home Mike Albadadejo on a bases-loaded groundout in the bottom of the first inning.  Albadadejo and junior Sean Bukovich led the game with back-to-back singles to set the table for the game-winning run.

FAU would see its lead grow in the next inning as junior Sean Bukovich’s sacrifice fly to left field easily scored freshman Chase Vergason, who led off the inning with a single.  Later in the inning, senior Anthony Mesa scored the game’s final run on a wild pitch by the Bearcats’ starting pitcher.

Junior outfielder Andy Mee and Scheffler paced the FAU offense with two hits each.  Junior infielder Nick Delguidice and senior outfielder Anthony Mesa each had doubles in the team’s nine-hit attack.

Relief pitcher Glen Troyanowski secured his first save of the season by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.  Mee also came in from the outfield to pitch a perfect eighth inning.

Florida Atlantic and Cincinnati will play the tie breaker of the season-opening, three-game series on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.

Nice to see Gipson have a strong start yesterday…the Owls need to take care of business today and take the season opening series.

Go Owls!
