fire him now so you don't screw up the recruiting for next year. Our assistant from new york city should handle all the recruiting, use whatever pull he has to get the boys from rucker park down to boca. that would be one bad ass team.
five scholarships, grab two jc guys and three frosh. Who's the next Mike Bell.

jdirico, Rucker Park? That would be a major catch! Even the ones standing on the sidelines who can't get in the games, are good!
St Tohns,Syracuse and UCONN among a few others, have their pickings. The only problem is that the ones still out there may have grade issues and need to go the JUCO route this year.

But like you say that team would be something! :o

Good points by the writer. Including my highlighted paragraph.

Boca Raton News Article:

Why Green must go
In My Opinion

Published Sunday, March 6, 2005
by Cory Jennerjohn

Florida Atlantic University president Frank Brogan and athletic director Craig Angelos are going to need new batteries for their remote controls after this weekend.

Normally this weekend is a time for teams to make their case to the NCAA selection committee with key matchups and conference tournaments filling up the airwaves. However, for the Owl men?s basketball team, they will remain perched at home after a disappointing 10-17 season.

But both the president and athletic director aren?t just watching for fan interest. They could be watching for prospective employees. Even though they are quick to announce they are merely ?evaluating?, the biggest question left is, what?s left to evaluate?

After six seasons with the Owls, it is evident that coach Sidney Green can snatch talent, but he has proven that he has a problem coaching them.
What Brogan and Angelos could do is bring in a solid assistant from a program like Boston College or Michigan State, who are always lurking in the Assocated Press Top 25. Hitting the home run like an assistant from Kansas or Duke would be attractive, but that doesn?t seem reasonable.

With all due respect, Green has had time to turn the tide. His highlight came during the 2001-02 season as he guided FAU to their first-ever A-Sun conference championship and a trip the NCAA tournament. However, instead of investing in the success of the program and recruiting, the wheels quickly fell off after one season, as they only won seven games.

Now that Brogan and Angelos are ?evaluating? Green, that puts a question mark on next season. Will players want to come to a program who they are unsure of who will be blowing the whistle in practice?

The last home game of the season says it all. The Owls lost to Mercer 107-88. Now I realize that a coach cannot go out there and set picks and grab rebounds, but the whole team looked like they were sleepwalking throughout the whole game. Following the game, Green gave all the credit to Mercer and refused to talk about how much of a hole that loss put FAU in terms of postseason play.

When I spoke to Angelos following the FAU baseball exhibition game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, he seemed like he wanted a change ? and he?s only been here a couple years. Imagine what would?ve happened had someone else been here. Green probably would not have been able to pace the hardwood for six seasons.

Green also has to go for the sake of the other coaches. If Green is allowed to stay, the rest of the 17 men?s and women?s programs will point to his failures and use that as a reason to kick their feet up. They could easily take the mentality that, if Green is allowed to stay with a 45-120 record after six seasons, then what motivation do I have to succeed?

President Brogan preached about his focus being on athletics during the FAU football banquet. This would be a perfect time for him to back that philosophy up.

The same rumors were going on last year and if Green is allowed to stay another year, they will probably be swirling around like a used hot dog wrapper. Green hurt himself by not inking a three-year contract last summer when he had the chance. Now he is probably kicking himself for not taking the university up on their offer. Of course, he could go to them now and say he would like to re-up his deal, but the FAU brass are going to ?evaluate? Green first and then make up their mind about a contract next. Which means, re-signing him isn?t high on the priority list right now.

For a coach that landed Mike Bell ? who ended up with A-Sun player of the year honors ? he cannot continue to ride the success of one player. You have to sell the success of the program first and follow that up with individual achievement second.

FAU must find a good X?s and O?s guy. A guy that can teach discipline as well as teach fundamentals. If they choose to fire Green, Brogan and Angelos would be smart to keep him on as a recruiter.

It isn?t going to be easy, but this is a move that the rest of the uniuversity and the community is watching to see if the FAU men?s basketball team will go move forward.

But, for now, Brogan and Angelos are stuck burning up the batteries in their remote and melting the digits in their fingers as they comb the landscape for FAU?s next successor.

I agree, that article says it all. We should write Cory Jennerjon and thank him for finally putting something like that in the public forum. I wish Ted Hutton would write a similar article for the Sun Sentinel and really put the pressure on Brogan and Angelos. They should just publish our writing on this forum to show that the few remaining fans of FAU basketball are demanding a change. Let's hope something happens soon.

Why would Green stay on as a recruiter if they fire him as coach? If I got fired and they said I could stay on as an assistant to my new boss, I'd tell them where they could stick it.

I think the university needs a fresh face. Say thanks to Sidney for the one good year, end the relationship and give somebody new a go at it.

President of the No Homers Club. Keepin' it real since 2001.

Travis Ford from Eastern Kentucky is one of the biggest up and coming coaches out there right now. He may go bigger than FAU but its worth a phone call. You would be surprised about what coaches will come coach a school with a 1A football team. The sunbelt is not the greatest but its much better than Asun……. I can't wait to get out of the a-sun.

CanadianOwl, I should have been more careful and eliminated that part of the Quote which the writer mentions keeping Green on as a recruiter - I agree that it should be a clean break and let the new guy put his own thumb print of the program.
