Owl's Solid Hitting Evens Series Against Trojans

Every FAU batter contributed either a hit, run or RBI in the Owls 11-3 victory over the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Saturday.

Senior Travis Ozga, a graduate of Pope John Paul II High School in Boca Raton , doubled twice and finished the day 3-for-5 with four RBI. Sophomore shortstop Nick DelGuidice added three hits for the Owls. Both Ozga and DelGuidice upped their season batting averages to .409.

FAU's offense provided junior starter Barry Rooks (2-0) with two runs in the bottom of the third to allow the Owls a 3-1 lead. Ozga hit a two-out RBI double in the right-centerfield gap scoring William Block from first base and Ozga came around moments later on an RBI-single by DelGuidice.

UALR (5-7; 1-1 Sun Belt) had briefly tied the game at 1-1 on Eric Hanlon’s single in the top of the third. The single plated Kody Kroll who was the first of two-straight batters to be hit by Rooks to start the inning.

Rooks hit four batters on the afternoon but turned in a quality start, working seven innings allowing just two runs on five hits.

UALR committed two costly throwing errors in the fourth, fueling a three-run FAU inning without a ball leaving the infield. The Trojans had four errors Saturday, increasing its season error total to 32- nearly three per game.

The FAU lead was 6-2 when Trojan starter Adam Champion (0-1) left in the game after four innings. Champion - who came in having given up just one earned run in 14 1/3 innings - was charged with three runs on seven hits.

Rooks left with an 8-2 lead, giving way to Alex Pepe in the eighth. Pepe came in to retire three-straight and Block went from second base to the mound to close out the Trojans in the ninth.

The series concludes at FAU Stadium Sunday at 1 p.m.
