Owls Defeat Ontario Blue Jays 4-0 in Scrimmage on Wednesday

The Florida Atlantic baseball team defeated the Ontario Blue Jays 4-0 on Wednesday night in an exhibition at FAU Baseball Stadium.  The Owls were led by a strong defensive performance as nine different pitchers each threw one scoreless inning in the victory.

“I was very pleased with our pitching staff tonight,” said head coach John McCormack.  “You have to like it when a pitching staff puts up that many zeroes regardless of who you play.”Offensively FAU was a little bit sluggish as they were unable to capitalize on opportunities throughout the game.  The Owls took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of 4th after three consecutive walks loaded the bases which led to two sacrifice flies.  FAU was unable to tally a hit in the inning despite scoring two runs.

That score would hold until the bottom of the 5th when Ian MacGeorge sent a towering fly ball over the right field wall for a solo home run.  Ryan Garton also added a solo home run in the bottom of the 7th to cap off the scoring and give FAU a 4-0 advantage.

“We had some opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on at the plate but I think we did what we had to do to get the job done,” McCormack said.  “I was happy with the way our team handled their business tonight and I think it showed on the scoreboard.  I also was encouraged by the showing from our fans.  The Blue Jays are a quality opponent and we look forward to scrimmaging them again next season.”

The Ontario Blue Jays are a Canadian select team made up of high school students ages 18 and under.

Florida Atlantic will get back to work on Thursday as they continue fall practice in preparation for the upcoming 2010 season which opens in February.

At least we can beat high school teams (from the baseball powerhouse of CANADA)....whether we can compete in D1 this year remains to be seen.
