Owls Host America East Champs This Weekend

Formidable Opponent

FAU takes on Stony Brook University this weekend in a four-game series that begins Friday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m.

Game one will be followed by a double-header on Saturday, February 28 at 1 p.m., and a single game on Sunday, March 1 at 1 p.m.

“Stony Brook is going to be good,” said FAU Baseball Head Coach John McCormack about this weekend’s opponent. “In every college baseball publication they are picked to win the America East title. Five of their six best offensive players return, and I expect them to come in and be ready.”

The Seawolves were 34-26 in 2008, claiming the America East tournament title to advance into NCAA Regional play in Tempe, Arizona . Stony Brook is armed with a veteran team which returns all nine starters in the field.

McCormack’s Owls scored 35 runs and had 16 extra-base hits en route to winning its three-game season-opening series with Fordham University last weekend. FAU started seven seniors on opening night. Tom Hatcher homered in his first two at-bats Friday and five different Owls totaled four hits in the series.

Senior left-handed pitcher Alex Pepe – who was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 2008 MLB Draft – was perfect through three-and-a-third innings Friday night for the Owls. Classmate Chris Schmitt earned the victory on Saturday.

"It was a nice win and a good all around effort," said McCormack, after Saturday's 11-5 win over Fordham. “The bullpen did a nice job and if we can continue to get that kind of performance from the pen it will be a nice season.”

Saturday’s double-header against Stony Brook is Boca Raton Firefighter’s Day. All local firefighters will receive $3 admission with firefighter’s ID.  Fans that attend Sunday’s game and bring their church or synagogue bulletin with them will receive a hot dog, chips, drink and a game ticket for $7.
