You're very clairvoyant.
The band is part of athletics at FAU and college in general. The band is funded, at least partially, through athletics and exists pretty much for the benefit of sports programs.
Finally, the best way to shine a light on injustice is to write and talk about, keep it in the public's consciousness.

Director of revamped FAU marching band is leaving
Move adds twist to spotty Owl history

Six months after reviving Florida Atlantic University's marching band, Director Chris Chapman is planning to leave.
Chapman told FAU this week he'll move on when the academic year ends in May, saying he wanted to pursue other jobs. He and his wife are finding the area too expensive, he said in an interview Friday.
His departure marks another twist in the tortuous history of the Marching Owls. They started on a shoestring in 2002, went on hiatus two years later, and reappeared this fall with a $240,000 budget, a brand new look and redoubled ambition.
FAU hoped to accompany its first football season in highly competitive Division I-A with a band of 100 or more, and the university brought in Chapman to lead the charge.
He had been an assistant director of the marching band at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and is working on a doctorate in music.
He ended up with 50 Marching Owls, "but there was a lot of energy out there on the field," Chapman said.
A smaller version of the band is playing at basketball games this winter, and FAU is sticking to plans to keep it marching ahead, said William Covino, chief of arts-and-letters.
The university expects to have a new band director on board in time for football season, he said.
"A number of people are sorry to see [Chapman] go … and we will all appreciate what he's built here and keep moving forward," Covino said. "We expect it to be bigger and louder and even more colorful and even more entertaining."
As for Chapman, who also teaches music classes and directs a new FAU concert band, he said he hopes to find a similar job in more affordable environs.
"I'm sure the future is bright for FAU, and I'm sure the future will be bright for me somewhere," he said.

I made no assumptions, but stated facts, BYU had to get permission from the University to interview Angelos for the AD position - While someone is under employement ( with a Contract ) he must first be release of his obligations first and in Angelos case he was given a opportunity to interview with BYU for the same position and had he accepted FAU probably would have been compensated somehow depending how his contract is writen and the same goes with Doherty who has a buy-out clause if he leaves within a certain time frame prior to his contract being fulfilled.
There has been cases where schools have been refused permission to interview individuals, it happens.
Morehead then would have to have had permission from Abgelos to talk to Rex and yes I made an assumption that Rex got Doherty'r permission, which I made only because of the friendship the two have, but the courtesy you would expect from your employer and your boss.
My other assumption was that the Band director probably had a similar clause in his contract and could very well had a no compete clause, but again I don't have the courtesy of any knowledge of his contract and simply made a statement that something else must have been the reason for his departure, which from the News article Talon posted does confirm my assestment to a degree - I am sure we will never know everthing revolving this issue regardless of what the Band Director may have told you, I am sure there are things he could not discuss with you and those the things I mentioned that where not made public. Let's be reasonable here, you don't fire someone just because he applied somewhere else, the University would stand to lose to much in retrobution, it just makes no sense.
I do not claim that I have all the facts and I do not, I have a feeling you do not as well. The facts are he will be replaced come the end of May and we need to move forward with the direction and growth the band will incur from that moment forward. Again, the University does have very strict protocols they have to adhere to when hiring and releasing someone of their duties, what you are implying goes against what I beleive to be a risk I don't think the University under Brogan would be willing to take, it just makes to sense, Brogan would not put the University at risk like that, thus why I made the comment something else must be the underlining issue, again the Article Talon posted I'm sure only paints part of the picture - there is always two sides to every story and the truth usually lies somewhere in the middle. I can understand that you are upset over his departure, but do you really thing the University would risk any retrobution the Band directors may take and since he has taken none then I think that also says something cocncerning the unwelcomed events that have taken place.
Let's all move forward, to much negative energy is being wasted other wise.
Peace !!

I asked the director about his cost of living comments. As I said earlier, he told me he (and the band) was fired for that one reason (applying for another job). He was told by his bosses to tell the media he resigned. He did not want to make waves and accepted his fate. He passed along the FAU administration spin. He said the cost of living was tough on him, but the fact that he did not resign makes it a moot point as far as his reason for leaving is concerned. It was just something to get the reporter off his back.
I continue to believe that speculating on any other reason for his departure is inappropriate the unfair to the man, who, BTW, I do not know very well and have not spoken to since just after the incident. I dropped the issue (except for an occasional comment here) when he decided not to fight.
FAU never answered my written questions abut this issue and therefore deserves every black eye its gets. I'll point out the next instance of the double standard when and if it happens.

I don't know whether the director had an employment contract. Do teachers all have contracts?

There is not much the people that post to this board can do about the band director issue unless you are hoping Brogan reads this board.
Can I make a suggestion since your last comment said you will continue with this line of discussion:
There is an "Open Forum" page on this board. I think that would be more appropriate for the discussion of the band director or any future controversial non sports issue. That might even be better. The number of guests on the board can be numerous. 10 or more sometimes. Those guest that want to comment on non sports issues can do so without having to register.
since you insist on complaining when you feel the need to, can you at least limit it to the board set aside for general discussion?

That is all I was asking initally. I understand that BMarkey feels something unjust took place and he has the right to complain about that. My only issue is that it is being done here. None of us has all of the facts. None of us has any power to change what happened. We know his and others position on the topic and rehashing it every few days doesn't do anyone any good. Perhaps a letter to the editor of the local papers or to the UP (FAU's newspaper) would be appropriate. Certainly that would get more of a response from FAU.
