SERIES THREAD: #20 FAU @ WKU - May 14th - 16th, 2015

Updates to magic numbers.

Last night's win provided FAU with a guarantee of no worse than a #4 seed.

While in 3rd, FAU is still hoping to risk 4th to get to 2nd, and hoping for a Southern Miss Sweep of MTSU. Then, FAU completes the 3-game sweep of WKU for 2nd. If Southern Miss does complete a sweep MTSU, and FAU goes anything other than 2-0 or 1-0 (with rainout) in the last two games against WKU, FAU would fall to 4th.

Southern Miss and MTSU will play a double header today due to incoming weather. The first game is scheduled to start at 3:00 PM EDT. That game, if all goes to schedule and is not an exteremely long game, should be decided prior to our 1st pitch at 7:00 PM EDT tonight. A Southern Miss win will still leave FAU in a #2 through #4 ranking, and give the #1 seed to Rice. An MTSU win will leave FAU and Southern Miss fighting for 3rd or 4th.

Also, ODU @ UAB have a scheduled 3:00 PM EDT. If that game is complete, and ODU wins, WKU will be eliminated from the C-USA tournament prior to its 1st pitch hosting FAU tonight.

Where the teams that are in can finish:
Rice: #1 or #2
MTSU: #1 through #3
FAU: #2 through #4
Southern Miss: #2 - #4
UTSA: #5 or #6
UAB: #5 - #8
FIU: #6 - #8

The teams fighting for final spot:
ODU: #6 - eliminated
Charlotte: #8 - eliminated
Marshall: #8 - eliminated
WKU: #8 - eliminated

Remarkably, with only 2 games remaining for each team, only LaTech is eliminated.

As few as 4, and not more than 6 teams in the tournament will have records above .500.  At least 1, and as many as 3 will have records below .500. As many as 3, and as few as zero, can finish at exactly .500

After the Night of Nights, Florida Atlantic has Drew Jackson back on the mound for the 7:00 PM start.

There were a couple of important games affecting this one that were played earlier today. With ODU's loss to UAB this afternoon, WKU is still alive.  WKU must still take 2 from FAU, have Marshall never win another game (2 rainouts, a loss and and rainout, or 2 losses), and ODU to lose to UAB again tomorrow. That would give the Hilltoppers either a 2-way tie for the #8 seed with ODU, which the Hilltoppers will take with their 2-1 record against ODU. In a 3-way tie with ODU and Charlotte, WKU and Charlotte hold 2-1 records, and ODU 2-4, eliminating ODU. In the next tiebreaker, head to head, ODU and Charlotte never faced each other. So, it would then go to records versus top winning percentages. The both went 0-3 versus Rice, MTSU and Southern Miss. WKU though, would win the tiebreaker with a 2-1 record against FAU, which swept Charlotte. If WKU ends up in any 3-way or 4-way tie including Marshall, WKU is out and Marshall is in.

In the other game, which went into a rain delay, MTSU is currently leading Southern Miss 8-7 in the top of the 7th in Murfreesboro. Southern Miss and MTSU will complete their series with a second game tonight. If Southern Miss wins both, and FAU takes two from WKU, FAU will take the #2 seed. A potential problem may be the weather tomorrow, and whether Florida Atlantic can even get that game in. If MTSU comes back in game 1, and takes game 2, FAU is the #3 seed regardless of what happens tonight and tomorrow. If MTSU wins either, it will lock up at least #2 seed, and FAU will lock the #3 seed with a win.

Starting Lineups:

FAU: Kerr 2b, Endris lf, Sanger rf, Santiago 3b, Collins cf, Puerta 1b, Dicks dh, Chatham ss, Abraham c, Jackson p

WKU: Miller cf, Hudzina 3b, Church 1b, Diedrick rf, Wofford ss, Wood dh, Murray lf, Messex c, Clarkson 2b, Pearson p

Hindsight is 20-20, but not having Santiago for most of the Rice series was a KILLER.
