Game Notes

Owls

Florida Atlantic completed a two game regular season series sweep of UCF on Tuesday night in convincing fashion, while scoring seven runs over the first three innings of play. The Owls' staff was equally impressive tallying a more than respectable 10 strikeouts in the 9-4 victory.

But after last weekend's disappointing series loss to the Hilltoppers in Bowling Green the Owls are on the outside looking in when it comes to a spot in the post season aside from a Conference USA Tournament title. Current projections do not include FAU, who was holding down the three seed in Gainesville for a period of time.

In order to rest normal opener starter Alex House, Coach McCormack will employ yet another stating combination this weekend opting to go with Kyle Marman for the opener on Thursday. Marman has been clocked as high as 96 MPH on his four seam fastball and has 27 K's in 21 innings of action this season. Saturday will feature Blake Sanderson once again with Sunday's hurler listed as TBA.

All nine regulars for the Owls have an on-base percentage of .372 or higher, towards the team's mark of .406. Shouppe has taken over the team lead and is now tied for second in C-USA at .462, percentage points.

Saturday will be the Owls' 2017 Senior Day, with ceremonies taking place prior to first pitch. Seven members of the team will be honored in that of Stephen Kerr, Austin Kirksey, Sean Labsan, Austin Langham, Esteban Puerta, Cameron Ragsdale and Jared Shouppe.

Monarchs

Old Dominion will look to clinch the No. 2 seed for the Conference USA Tournament this weekend against the Owls. Provided they can pull out one victory win while LA Tech losses a contest at MTSU, the Monarchs will do just that.

ODU has not lost a road series all year, coming into the weekend with a perfect mark of 4-0, and are 12-1 overall in weekend series play. They cracked the Top 25 for the first time since 2007 on May 8, coming in at No. 25 in the D1 Baseball Top 25.

The Monarchs have 11 wins when tied or trailing after the sixth inning this season, including four walkoff wins. They are 23-6 when scoring the game’s first run.

Hitting has been a strength for ODU as six different players have 30 or more RBI this season, including a team-leading 53 by Zach Rutherford. Turner Bishop, who is at 29 RBIs and has hit a majority of the season in the 8-hole, is one RBI shy of making it seven.

On the hill, the combo of Sam Sinnen and Adam Bainbridge have both gone five innings in all but one start combined. Bainbridge was dominant early in the season (6-1, 0.99 ERA thru April 15) and Sinnen has gone going 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his last three starts.

Florida Atlantic takes the opener with a solid showing both offensively and defensively. In a turn of events, McCormack inserts House in the 5th inning. House produces an efficient five innings of work needing just 50 total pitches to get the job done with 66% of them being strikes.

Starter Kyle Marman threw two innings with two hits and three strikeouts, and Nick Swan added two innings on the hill while allowing two hits as well.

Pedro Pages and Eric Miranda posted an RBI each to accompany the long balls of both Esteban Puerta (3RBI), and Jared Shouppe. The Owls scored all of their runs in the first three inning of play (1,1,4).

The teams will meet again on Friday at 6:30 PM for game two at FAU baseball Stadium.

I swear we have the best coach in college baseball. He has made more moves this season and very few have failed. If we had gotten two outs in SoMiss, we would be on top of CUSA. Our arms and bats are ready for the tourney. I'm not saying we will win. But we have a very good shot. Strong performance tonight .House  50 pitches for 5 innings. That is efficiency. Senior night tomorrow.

From a non baseball guy, do we need to win or make it to the final round of the conference tourney to go to the post season?

We need to win the series here and essentially win the tournament to be a lock in. Right now I think we are sitting on the bubble looking it. It is basically up to the NCAA and selection committee to make that determination.

We do have one of the best, and that is according to a lot of people within the college baseball community. He has since coming on put out a constant winning team year after year. And he has done it all with facilities compared to the rest of conference and other schools which we can all agree upon are subpar at the moment but he still brings a winning ball club to the field. We love having him as our coach.

Dusky...it is so close. Remember , there are teams that will be in it that we can crush. We screwed up two weeks ago at So Miss.

The Owls got off to another great start in game two, answering the Monarchs first inning solo effort with a four spot in the second off four straight hits. Frank, Kerr, and Rivera all singled with Poore closing out the quartet with a double.

However Old Dominion get another pair in the third and starer Blake Sanderson (2.2IP, 4H, 3R, 2BB) is quickly relived by Sean Labsan, who secures the final out of the frame.

Labsan gives up a homer to lead off the fourth, but seems to recover well with two straight outs immediately thereafter.

Unfortunately, a meltdown then ensued including two walks, a passed ball, wild pitch, and an intentional walk.

Marc Stewart tosses his way out of a bases loaded jam to retire the side, but Monrachs come away with just two run and have taken the lead.
