Need to get a better start from Miednick though, 8K in six great but also 8 hits and 4 ER, that would be an ERA of 6!
Another thing to consider is that it was a bit cold, 50° at the start and probably a few degrees less in the 5th. Pitchers lose feel for the ball in their fingertips when it is cold, and the impact of the difference is more notable with the better pitchers - it's really difficult to deflate a baseball to compensate. He still threw a bit over 63% strikes, which most pitchers would consider a very good game - though Jake has been sitting at an astounding 70%. I'm guessing about 6-8 pitches that would have normally broken into the paint area stayed just off, and a few more stayed up a tad more rather than breaking down. It's a lot easier for a pitcher to adapt from cold weather to warm than from warm to cold. We never even had a practice anywhere near that cold.
