Florida Atlantic fell to Louisiana-Lafayette Friday night, losing 5-3 on the road. The Ragin’ Cajuns worked the Owl’s pitching staff throughout the night and were able to tax starter Austin Gomber.

Gomber tossed seven innings, but gave up ten hits and three earned runs. The sophomore surrendered a solo-home run in the first inning – which set the tone for the contest.

The Ragin’ Cajuns would add a run in the second, before tallying five extra base hits over the course of the game.

FAU found it’s offense in the second inning when Tyler Rocklein homered to left field, but the Ragin’ Cajuns were able to keep their lead. Gomber allowed runs in the fourth and fifth innings, as he struggled to find his command on the mound.

The Owl’s took advantage of a throwing error in the top of the sixth and were able to cut into the deficit with two runs.  Levi Meyer singled to score Robert Buckley and Brendon Sanger drew a walk to bring Nathan Pittman across the plate. FAU trailed 4-3 after six innings of play.

Kevin Alexander was called upon to relieve Gomber in the eighth inning, but the senior gave up a costly run on three hits.

FAU was able to load the bases in the top of the ninth inning with one out and looked poised for a rally, but a grounder from Buckley was turned for a double play to end the game.

The loss moves FAU (25-13, 10-6) a game out of first place in the Sun Belt Conference standings, and ends a three game win streak. Louisiana (26-12, 9-7) improves to 19-4 at home this season.

Gomber (4-3) was handed his second straight loss, while Alexander pitched just one inning. Austin Robichaux got the win for Louisiana after giving up three runs in seven and a third innings of work.

Mark Nelson, who had been nursing a hamstring injury, played as the designated hitter and went 1-for-4. Rocklein’s home run was his sixth of the season, as he went 1-for-2 with a walk.

The teams will return to the diamond Saturday night for the second game of the series.

Note the attendance....2369. FAU is lucky to get 236. FAU has truely dropped the ball with the baseball program. Best on campus , yet promoted so little.
