Florida Atlantic rallied for a victory in the ninth inning Saturday night, to beat Louisiana 5-4 on the road. Ricky Santiago hit a two-run home run in the top of the inning, which gave the Owls their first and only lead of the night.

The win moves FAU back into a three-way tie for first place in the Sun Belt Conference standings, following a loss from Western Kentucky at South Alabama.

Santiago’s home run was only his second of the season and came with one out in the ninth. The sophomore stood in the box and took the ball deep over the right field wall against Matt Hicks – who happens to be one of the league’s top closers. Brendon Sanger reached base on a single earlier in the frame, and became the game’s go ahead run.

Closer Hugh Adams finished out the contest by recording the final three outs, and picked up his 12th save of the season.

Jermey Strawn started the game on the hill for FAU (26-13,11-6) and was able to toss seven and two thirds innings of work. The right-hander gave up two runs in the first before another in the fourth to Louisiana (26-13, 9-8).

Bo Logan (4-0) replaced Strawn in the eight to record a single out, and was awarded the win with his effort.

FAU scored in the fourth inning on a Nathan Pittman fielder’s choice, and took advantage of an error by the Ragin’ Cajuns in the sixth. Corey Keller homered in the seventh, but it was Santiago’s efforts that provided the win.

Levi Meyer and Keller both finished the game 3-for-4, while Santiago was 1-for-4. Keller scored a pair of runs and drove in a base runner, as Meyer had a double.

Ryan Wilson pitched seven innings for Louisiana, but it was Hicks who was held responsible for the loss.

Pittman was caught stealing for just the third time this season, as the Owls failed to snag a bad. FAU is now 3-1 when hitting two or more home runs in a game.

The clubs will close out the series Sunday afternoon, in a game that will decide the winner of the three-game set.
