SERIES THREAD: FAU @ Louisiana-Lafayette - April 19-21, 2013

Glad for the W.

This team is kinda strange in that, for as good as they are, they keep seeming to drop one game in each series… but since they're winning the other two it's still good enough to be a top SBC team. As such, I expect them to win tomorrow because that's just how it works.

As a side note, Chun said on LaVicka's interview today that he has "no doubt" that once we can get money for proper facilities that McCormack can take us to Omaha. Don't disagree with him there, but it's cool to hear the AD point that out.

Tough first inning for Brandon Rhodes. We are already way down.

Florida Atlantic was pounded on the road Sunday afternoon losing 12-2 to Louisiana in seven innings. Brandon Rhodes gave up six earned runs to start the contest, as he failed to record a single out in the effort.

The ten-run loss marks the team’s second worst of the season, and ensures that  FAU (26-14, 11-7) will no longer be tied for first place in the Sun Belt Conference standings.

Rhodes – who had yet to give up a home run in his career – was taken deep for a grand slam by Seth Harrison, as the Ragin’ Cajuns jumped all over the freshman. Louisiana (27-13, 10-8) added two more runs off of Rhodes, before he was replaced by Michael Sylvestri to end the inning.

Sylvestri couldn’t stop the bleeding, as he gave up two runs in the top of the second. Jake Meiers would step in as the Owl’s third pitcher of the contest, and he surrendered an additional pair of runs in the fourth.

FAU salvaged a score in the sixth, when Mitch Morales grounded out to second, allowing Brendon Sanger to cross the plate – but the damage was already done.

Alex Koji took over for Meiers in the sixth and gave up two unearned runs, creating an eleven-run deficit for the visitors.

Due to the conference’s Sunday travel rule, the Owl’s needed to cut the margin to less than ten runs before the end of the seventh inning to keep playing, but couldn’t accomplish the task. Sean Murrell doubled to score Ricky Santiago, before Nathan Pittman would groundout to end the game.

Cody Boutte tossed all seven innings for Louisiana and gave up just five hits in the winning performance. Rhodes (3-2) was the losing pitcher for FAU, allowing six runs on five hits. Andrew Archer pitched a scoreless inning and a third in a relief, and was a lone bright spot in the loss. Sanger finished the game 1-for-3 with a run scored, as Pittman was 0-for-3 with a walk.

Defensively the Owls committed three errors, and now move to 8-5 on the season when making two or more mistakes.

FAU will return to competition Wednesday night against Miami in Coral Gables.
