ULM and Florida Atlantic will battle on the diamond for the final time in regular season play as Sun Belt foes this weekend. The Warhawks are defending 2012 SBC Tournament Champions, but are struggling in thus far in 2013 with just one win in conference play and a last place standing.
Louisiana-Monroe concluded a two game home-and-home series on Tuesday night against Grambling State. After dropping the first contest 0-4 on the road earlier in March, the Warhawks slipped away with a 3-2 win in 11 innings in Monroe. A walk-off single from CF Dalton Herrington would prove the difference in the end, with 1B Corbin Green producing a perfect mark of 4-of-4 with a run scored and RBI against the Tigers. Green (.308 avg) is the only member of the squad hitting above .300, while the unit overall checks in with a SBC worst .228 mark (10th).
Last weekend in conference play hitting problems displayed themselves, as ULM bested Arkansas-Little Rock 3-2 on Friday, but were outscored 24-6 thereon en route to 3-11 and 3-13 losses to the Trojans on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Taylor Abdalla collected two hits and two RBI in Sunday’s series finale at UALR, and Herrington recorded a career-best four hits with one run and one RBI during Saturday's contest.
On the mound, the Warhawks also find themselves last in the Belt with a collective mark of 4.73, although Friday's starter Cale Wine (2.08 ERA) trails only FAU's Austin Gomber (1.75 ERA) for the best individual showing. Wine tends to go deep into the game having tossed 52 innings (1st SBC) in eight appearances, with all being starts.
The Warhawks are .500 (7-7) at home, and have posted a 1-3 mark against ranked opponents.
Florida Atlantic continues to paint the win column and will look for their 8th straight overall win, and fifth straight conference tilt, on Friday night. They also have a new batting leader in Brendon Sanger (photo), who has finally met the Owls' stats requirement of 1.5 plate appearances per team game.
Sanger got to the plate five times on Tuesday night against Lynn, and was heavily responsible for narrowly avoiding disaster in FAU's 7-6 clipping of the Knights. He's highly likely to remain in the series rotation while checking in with a .422 average and a healthy .556 slugging percentage.
Given the expectation of continued playing time this weekend, he should meet the SBC's requirement of 2.0 appearances per team game, and crack the stats column therein soon enough as well.
Of note on the hill for the Owls is a change in the Saturday starter from Jake Meiers to Kevin Alexander. Alexander had nine starts last season but a nagging injury put him behind during this year's outset. He was effective in the role in 2012 and ended the year with a 5-1 record.
FAU remains tops in the conference in team ERA with a 2.87 mark, where they place three of the top 10 performers: Gomber, Brandon Rhodes, and Jeremy Strawn. Closer Hugh Adams leads the league with nine saves, and that mark is also good enough for 3rd place nationally.
Florida Atlantic is 5-2 away from Boca Raton.

Owls Take Game One 8-6; Win 8th Straight
FINAL:
FAU 8 ULM 6
Florida Atlantic extended their winning streak to eight games on Friday night with an 8-6 win over Louisiana-Monroe.
FAU (21-9, 8-2) registered 12 hits for the tilt, led by shortstop Mitch Morales’ 2-for-4, 2RBI showing.
Nathan Pittman, Levi Meyer, and Ricky Santiago each tallied a pair of hits as well to accompany solo RBI performances.
The game remained scoreless until the top half of the 4th inning, when the Owls loaded the bases for Morales (photo).
The sophomore infielder responded with a two out single to right that give Florida Atlantic a 2-0 lead, and brought in Brendon Sanger and Santiago.
After the Owls added another run in the top half of the 5th inning to extend their margin, ULM (11-19, 1-0) countered with three runs during their turn to even matters, led by Jeff Fullers 2RBI double.
But four 6th inning scores by FAU, which were propelled by five hits, would prove the difference maker in the end as Florida Atlantic took the lead for good.
Santiago doubled in the bottom half of the 8th to account for the Owls’ final mark.
Austin Gomber (7I, 6H, 4ER, 9K) was the winning pitcher and improving to 4-1 on the season. Michael Sylvestri tossed a frame in relief before giving way to closer Hugh Adams, who extended his saves count to 10.
Adams encountered some trouble in ULM’s last plate appearance, surrendering the contest’s last score before settling down to retire three straight, which included a pair of strikeouts.
Fuller was 3-for-5 with 3RBI to pace the Warhawks offensively, and starter Cale Wine (5I, 11H, 7R) was handed the loss, dropping him to 3-5 on the year.
The teams hit the field again tomorrow at 7:00 PM for game two.

Now, living up here above Atlanta, I read the Owls info here but it would be nice to see the FAU scores, win or lose - reported in sources like the AJC and USA Today. They almost never are unlike most other schools, even D3 schools are. What is our SID doing, this seems like a REAL SIMPLE task to me. Can Mr. Chun PLEASE look into this and get it rectified.

End 1st: https://twitter.com/search/%23FAU Baseball down early against https://twitter.com/search/%23ULM. Alexander walks 2, gives up 2 hits, and the Warhawks cash in for a 4-0 lead.
