Rainy days killed a chance for Florida Atlantic to further set themselves apart in the Sun Belt standings last weekend, as a myriad of delays resulted in a truncation of the planned three game stint against Arkansas State. They did get one in though, and that fell on the left side of the column.

Miami would be next on Tuesday in the final of a three game non-conference series. Due to the lack of action over the weekend, the Owls had a chance to toss some of their would be starters for a spell, making things much more interesting before falling 3-1 in Coral Gables.

But while the pitching proved better than any of the other games against ranked opponents thus far in the season, the batting didn't follow suit, as FAU went hitless during their final four trips to the plate.

"It was a clean game and we just didn't come up with that big hit to put us over the top', said FAU Coach John McCormack.

McCormack has to be pleased with a particular member of his staff, who tossed a hitless inning of spot duty in hopes of setting up a successful final at bat.

After producing a 3.92 ERA in 2011, senior lefty Ahmed Garcia (photo) seems to have found his pitch placement in 2012 and sits first in appearances for the Owls with 26, while touting a 1.67 ERA.

He's cut opponent's offensive success down as well, dropping from a .293 showing to that of a .243 mark, while ranking 3rd amongst the active non-starters in batting average.

The Owls currently occupy third in the conference in both team hitting (.286) and pitching (4.30). Mike Albaladejo's .361 mark at the plate is good enough for a team best (3rd SBC), and right hander Ryan Garton's 58 K's is 5th overall in the Belt.

Troy was co-tabbed to finish first in the Sun Belt for 2012, but matters haven't gone their way thus far at 6-12.

Designated hitter Logan Pierce is currently the conference's best hitter sporting a .386 average, but Belt pitcher of the year candidate Tyler Ray has struggled with a 3-4 record and 4.78 ERA.

The trio of RF Boone Shear, 1B Danny Collins, and Pierce make up what is arguably one of the best RBI producing middle line-up groupings in DI, combining for 118 together. Shear and Collins also claim eight jacks a piece.

Dropping a 7-0 affair to Auburn, the Trojans rebounded nicely on Wednesday night with a 9-1 run past Alabama A&M. Troy managed just four hits against the Tigers, but rattled off an even dozen against the Bulldogs.

The Trojans are 10-8 at home on the season, and FAU has a road mark of 10-7 on the road.

The last time the two teams met, Troy knocked Florida Atlantic out of the 2011 Sun Belt Tournament with a 6-9 loss in Monroe, LA.

Rain should not be a factor for the series with only 10% of showers all weekend, but Sunday's forecast is calling for 90' at game time.

Game One

FINAL:

FAU 7 †Troy 3

Fifteen hits and solid pitching propelled the Owls to a 7-3 win in game one against Troy on Friday night in game one of the series.

Florida Atlantic (26-15, 14-3) scored a run in each of their turns during the first two innings for a 2-0 lead, but the Trojans tied it up in the bottom of the second courtesy of RF Chase Mathisí two run shot to right.

Kyle Newton would answer for FAU though, doubling in Mike Albaladejo to put the Owls back on top with a 3-2 advantage in the top of the third.

That score would hold for three consecutive frames, although Troy (18-24, 6-13) threatened in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs until DH Boone Sheer lined out to Newton to retire the side.

The night ended for Trojan starter Taylor Ray (7IP, 13H, 6R, 5K) in the seventh.

FAU pushed the margin to 6-2 from four hits off Ray, including the second double of game by Newton, and a trio of singles from Alex Hudak, Mike Spano, and Mitch Morales.

Morales (photo) went 3-of-4 with an RBI, matching his career high in hits.

The Owls scored their last run for a 7-2 lead off a bases loaded balk in the ninth.

Ryan Garton (8-2) was the wining pitcher, allowing just two runs off five hits in seven innings.

Ahmed Garcia threw the final two frames for Florida Atlantic; enticing three straight fly outs in the eighth, before surrendering a homerun to Austin Golden in the Trojans' last at bat for the contestís final score.

Five players saw multiple hit performances for FAU, with Troy tallying a total of just six for the tilt.

The teams will meet for game two tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.

Game Two

FINAL:

FAU 4 †Troy 6

Troy evened the score on Saturday with a 6-4 win over the Owls in game two of the series; notching matters up at one game each.

After netting three straight hits with one out, the Trojans touched up Owl starter Kevin Alexander for a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

Florida Atlantic (26-16, 14-4) responded with a single score to reduce the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the third.

Alexander found himself in a jam again in the bottom of the inning though, walking the first batter then issuing back-to-back hits that winded up putting another pair on the board for Troy.

That would be all for Alexander (2IP, 5H, 4R, 2K) as Coach John McCormack went to the pen in favor of Michael Sylvestri.

The Owls tied it up with a three spot in the fourth, as Kyle Newton blasted his sixth homer of the year over the center field wall, and Geoff Jimenez and Mike Albaladejo (2-of-4, RBI) added a double each to aid a 4-4 deadlock.

Trojan starter Joe Hernandez (3.2IP, 5H, 4R) would find his way to the dugout as well thereafter, but a two out solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth put Troy (19-24, 7-13) back on top.

With the bases loaded, Florida Atlantic had a chance to add to their total during their turn until a ground out by Jimenez would end the side.

Another solo shot later in the seventh from the bat of Tyler Hannah, off reliever Bo Logan, made it 6-4 in favor of the home team for a score that would go the distance.

FAU saw Robert Buckley single with two outs in the top of the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate in Corey Keller, but he grounded out to end the game.

There were no errors by either team in the contest, and Troy edged FAU 11-10 in hits.

Sylvestri took the loss, dropping to 0-3 on the year.

With an undefeated Sun Belt series mark on the line, the Owls will take the field for game three tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.

Game Three

FINAL:

FAU 0 †Troy 9

Troy scored eight runs in their last two at bats en route to a 9-0 win over the Owls in game three of the series on Sunday afternoon.

Florida Atlantic (26-17, 14-5) stranded nine runners over the course of the contest, and was shutout for the first time in league play on the year.

The Trojans broke the ice in the bottom of the fourth off a RBI single by Boone Shear.

FAUís Mitch Morales committed a throwing error that allowed Logan Pierce to advance all the way to third on a routine grounder to set up the score and a 1-0 lead for Troy (20-24, 8-13).

Trojan hurler Ryan Brady (1-3) was relived in the top of the seventh, limiting the Owls to just six hits.

Conversely, FAU sent Austin Gomber (6.1 IP, 6H, 3ER, 5K), †back out for a career best seventh inning of work. And thatís when things begin to change on the scoreboard.

After reaching on a fielders choice, Troyís Danny Collins scored all the way from first base, as Tyler Vaughn swatted a line drive double past Alex Hudak. The resulting play at the plate was just late.

A two run shot to left from Jo-El Bennett would then put the deficit at 4-0 before Greg Bennis then took the hill in relief of Gomber.

But Bennis struggled with control hitting the first two batters he would face. Both runners advanced off back-to-back steals before a passed ball from Bennis allowed the fifth run to cross the plate.

A sacrifice fly by Tyler Hannah then capped off the five run Trojan seventh.

Needing runs badly, the Owls would put two aboard in the eight with just one out. But as had been the case all day long, they were left aboard.

Troy added a trio of runs in their last trip to the plate to make it 9-0 before setting FAU down in order in the ninth on three straight grounders.

Gomber (3-3) took the loss for Florida Atlantic, who was led by Robert Buckley (2-of-3), Corey Keller (2-of-4), and Mark Nelson (2-of-4).

The Owls next return to Boca Raton to host Western Kentucky on Friday night in the first of a three game series at FAU baseball Stadium.
