I think it is official. We have sub-par hitting. No production. Wow. The guys need to regroup because they are not as good as advertised. Coach Mac needs to start recruiting a power hitter or two because we have zero power.

It isn't that we have zero power. This lineup actually has more pop potential than last year. But, the mistakes on pitch selection have been hugely detrimental and gotten in the way, squelching the potential. Extra base hits, even doubles, are far too infrequent due to swings at pitches outside of hitting zones, WAY too many 2-strike counts, and extremely high frequency of swings and misses, resulting in nearly 40% of outs being accounted for by DP and K in addition to singles rather than extra base hits.  Tonight we had 13 swings and misses. By comparison, with Gomber and Rhodes throwing well, they had 8. There is a perfect swing for every pitch.  Too often it seems that we think there is one perfect swing, and try to wait for the one pitch that matches, dig a hole, and then get lost. By my count, tonight 56% of FAU batters (20 of 36) went into 2-strike counts - that's way too high.

This team has all the God-given physical talent it needs. It just needs to develop the mental talent that compliments the physical talent and makes it productive. The lineup is young, it will come, though it is disappointing that it hasn't come along as much as we hoped to this point.
