Re: SERIES THREAD: Troy @ FAU - Apr 26-28, 2013

Florida Atlantic continued their struggles Friday night, losing 8-3 to Troy at home. Austin Gomber allowed five runs in just four and two thirds innings of work, as the Owl’s failed to find their offense until late in the contest.

The loss comes as the third in a row for FAU (26-15, 11-8) and gives Troy (31-11, 12-7) their seventh straight victory.

“It won’t do any good,” head coach John McCormack said. “We got to pitch better early… We got to be able to put something on the board early.”

The Trojans came to Boca Raton with one of the nation’s top offenses, and that held true in the opening frame of the game. Gomber was taxed for an RBI double in the bottom of the first, which was only the start of his problems.

Gomber would surrender a pair of home runs to first baseman Trae Santos, as Troy constructed a six run lead by the bottom of the fifth inning.

Trojan’s pitcher Tanner Hicks was commanding on the mound for the visitors, and was able to work a strong breaking ball. The right-hander tossed a complete game and held the Owl’s to just six hits.

Tyler Rocklein was able to get FAU on the scoreboard in the ninth inning with a three-run home run to right field, but the effort came too late.

Gomber (4-3) was handed his third consecutive loss, despite being regarded as one of the top pitchers in the conference. The two home runs he allowed – came as the sixth and seventh of the season against him. The sophomore has now given up multiple home runs in back-to-back games.

“I didn’t think he was very good tonight. I didn’t think he had very good stuff. He competed, but I don’t think he had great stuff. According to the chart it didn’t look like he had his normal velocity. Again we don’t score many runs for him,” McCormack said.

Troy was able to tally 14 hits, with eight coming against Gomber. Kevin Alexander replaced Gomber in the fifth and gave up an unearned run on just two hits.

Rocklein finished the night 2-for-3, and was the only Owl to record multiple hits. Levin Meyer doubled in the ninth, and scored on the Rocklien home run along with pinch hitter Billy Endris.

Center fielder Nathan Pittman laid-out for a ball hit deep to left field, and was shaken up following the play. McCormack said after the game that he thought the leadoff man is alright and should be able to play the rest of the weekend.

The Owl’s fall to 4-6 in their last ten Sun Belt conference games, and move to third place in the league standings. The two teams will return to the diamond Saturday afternoon for the second game of the series.

“I don’t think anything is a must win yet. It’s not a must win, but a for sure we need a win,” McCormack said.
