It wasn’t a must win, but according to head coach John McCormack it was a much needed win. Florida Atlantic took down Troy 1-0 Saturday afternoon, to even out the series and stop a three-game skid.

Jermey Strawn was stellar on the mound, and tossed eight shutout innings, giving up just four hits. The right hander struck out five batters, and was able to tame one of the country’s top offenses.

With the game scoreless heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Tyler Rocklien came up with a much needed hit. The left fielder knocked his team-leading 17th double of the year and gave the club a runner in scoring position for the first time all afternoon.

Robert Buckley would lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance Rocklien to third, and the Owls looked poised to capitalize on the opportunity. However, Levi Meyer would hit into a fielders choice and Rocklien was thrown out at home – which ended any scoring threat.

It appeared that the contest was going to remain tied, but a costly error from the Trojans proved to be the deciding factor. Corey Keller reached base on a throwing error committed by Troy and Meyer crossed the plate to give the game it’s first and only run.

Strawn would continue to pitch a shutout, before Hugh Adams would record the final three outs of the contest. The closer struck out two batters, and preserved the much needed one-run victory.

The win for FAU (27-15, 12-8) came off of just two hits offensively, and effectively ended Troy’s (31-12, 12-8) seven-game win streak.

Strawn (3-2) picked up his third win of the season, and is now a perfect 3-0 when pitching eight innings or more. Adams recorded his 13th save of the year in his 18th appearance out of the bullpen.

Rocklein finished the afternoon 1-for-3, but had a strikeout. The Owls as a team struck out six times and drew just one walk.

FAU will return to the field Sunday afternoon against Troy, and go for the series win. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Boca Raton.
