Two home runs were the difference Sunday afternoon, as the Owls fell 5-3 to Troy at home.

Florida Atlantic (27-17, 12-9) had led for a majority of the contest, but the Trojan’s (32-12, 13-8) were able to take advantage of poor pitching. Bo Logan surrendered a two-run home run in the fifth inning to tie the contest, before Trae Santos took Michael Sylvestri’s fast ball deep over the right field wall.

“They made it work, they made it count,” head coach John McCormack said.

Santos’s home run was his third of the series, and gave Troy a three-run lead. Sylvestri had come in for relief of Logan, who had tossed four scoreless innings before giving up the two-run shot over the wall.

FAU had taken a lead on a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning when Ricky Santiago and Sean Murrell singled to bring runners across the plate, but after that, the offense went cold.

The Owl’s would load the bases on two separate occasions, but failed to to score a run.

“We don’t score runs. We get guys on, whether its a nervousness thing or whatever, but guys get in the box and they can’t seem to perform with guys on base,” McCormack said.

Troy would commit an error in the eight inning, which led to a sacrifice-fly from Murrell to score Corey Keller – but the run wouldn’t be enough.

Freshman Kyle Miller started the game for FAU, and he threw just one scoreless inning while Sylvestri (3-2) was handed the loss. The senior reliever has now given up a total of six runs in his last three appearances out of the bullpen. Kevin Alexander worked three and two thirds scoreless inning, and was efficient in relief.

The Owl’s batters struck out a total of 10 times, and left nine runners on base. Nathan Pittman went 1-for-4 with a walk, but struck out on three separate occasions. Sean Murrell finished 1-for-3 with two RBI’s after getting the nod at first base.

FAU will take a much needed break for final exams before hosting Arkansas-Little Rock for a three-game series next weekend.
