Fresh off a come from behind victory against A-Sun and cross state rival Florida Gulf Coast 6-3 on Tuesday, the Owls welcome in Arkansas Little-Rock this weekend for the 2011 home series finale and hope to keep filling the win column.

Currently in a three way tie for third with Western Kentucky and Louisiana-Lafayette, FAU will be looking to take care of business with only six games remaining and the need to establish an attractive post season resume should they not be successful in taking the league tournament. The team is 23-of-28 in Boca Raton thus far.

The Trojans found their way out of near rock bottom when they snapped a seven game losing streak last weekend, sweeping three from Louisiana-Monroe. Now they are in a fight to stay alive for the eighth seed.

Next to last amongst Sun Belt members in team ERA at 6.01, the Achilles heel for UALR has been its pitching staff. Team batting isn't much better, notching a seventh place standing at .278. The squad is just 5-of-16 on the road this year in action away from Gary Hogan Field.

Florida Atlantic has two players in the top 15 in hitting in Alex Hudak (2nd, .398), and Nick DelGuidice (12th, .348). DelGuidice was recently named to the watch list for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award. Hugh Adams continues to pave the way in saves for the Owls with nine.

FAU will honor 12 seniors, six of which are starters, on Sunday: *Sean Bukovich, Joey Burkhalter, Eddie Cassidy, *Raymond Church, *Nick DelGuidice, Taylor Everist, *Colby Gratton, Jason Kitchen, *Andy Mee, Mike Ruccio, *Dan Scheffler and Glen Troyanowski.

* Signifies starter

Series Thread - UALR vs FAU: May 13th - 15th, 2011

Ryan Garton (5-3) pitched perhaps his best outing on the year as Florida Atlantic (29-19, 15-10) downed UALR 3-1 on Friday night in Boca Raton to take a 1-0 series lead. Garton went seven innings, giving up six hits and one run while striking out five.

Dan Scheffler’s two run blast in the bottom of the first inning, which plated Nathan Pittman (2-of-3), put the Owls on top early before a five inning scoring drought occurred.

Florida Atlantic threatened to add more in the bottom of the fifth when Sean Bukovich led off the inning with a walk and Andy Mee singled to place runners on the corners with two outs. But Pittman couldn’t return the favor, grounding into a double play and ending the threat.

An RBI single by UALR’s Greg Garcia put the Trojans (19-28, 9-16) on the board in the top of the seventh inning for Garton’s only run allowed even though he struck out the side.

The Owls went to the pen in the eighth in favor of off-speed hurler Ahmed Garcia. Garcia was effective in the set up role striking out two and enticing the third via a pop-up.

FAU looked for insurance runs in the bottom of the frame with two on and no outs before Trojan’s starter Travis Henke handed the ball over to reliever Andrew Hohn in hopes of making it out of the jam.

It came to fruition when Nick DelGuidice’s bases loaded bloop single off Hohn scored Pittman for his second run of the game.

Hugh Adams (10th save) took to the hill for FAU in the ninth, shutting the UALR side down in order to close the game for the Owls.

Scheffler, who had been the victim of two hit by pitch’s to the face earlier in the year, had another close call when a ball grazed the left side of his batter’s helmet.

With the Owls on top 9-7, game two has been suspended in the bottom of the seventh due to lightning and rain.

UALR was first to get on the scoreboard, tacking on three runs in the first inning as the Owls committed two errors.

The Owls countered with a solo run in the bottom of the inning when Dan Scheffler doubled to score Andy Mee.

Colby Gratton’s two RBI single kicked off the bottom of the second to bring the game even as Mee and Mike Albaladejo crossed the plate.

FAU would later add two more to behind a Nick DelGuidice sac fly and Bukovich single to lead 5-3 after three complete.

Gratton would show his prowess on the opposite side of the ball in the fifth inning, making a leaping and outstretched catch in center field that robbed the Trojans of an extra base hit and brought the crowd to life.

The celebration was short lived however as Davis gave up back-to-back doubles thereafter which saw the Trojans knot it up at five a piece.

David Cassidy quickly broke it open again in the fifth with a lead off solo home run before the Owls sent three more around the bags to hold a 9-5 lead that looked safe.

But Davis (121 pitches) fell behind again, giving up two runs, before Ahmed Garcia made his second appearance in the series in the seventh inning with two outs and two on. After running the count full, he secured the final out before being greeted by Davis on the mound.

Play will resume at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, with game three following.

Why not just call the game due to weather? It's past 5 innings and the home team was winning.

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

Andy Mee came on in the 8th to finish things off, while Paul Davis earned the win for Florida Atlantic and improves to 9-1 on the year.

Arkansas Little Rock (20-29, 10-17) jumped out to an early lead and held onto it, taking game three 4-2 on Sunday and avoiding a series sweep by the Owls.

Surrendering four hits, walking a batter, and committing a throwing error to first, R.J. Alvarez gave-up all three of his runs in the first inning. He would settle in nicely thereafter, tossing five scoreless frames and striking out eight in the process.

However, run support was no where to be found aside from solo spots in the fifth and seventh innings as FAU (30-20, 16-11) left 12 on base throughout the contest.

With the game on the line and down two runs, a lead off walk by Colby Gratton and single by Raymond Church put runners on the corners for FAU with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. That set the stage for Dan Scheffler, who had been hot as of late. But Scheffler struck out swinging.

The Owls tried to move Church over via a steal attempt, but he was caught in the process before an Alex Hudak pop up ended the contest.

Mike Albaladejo was a perfect 3-of-3 from the plate, and Andy Mee and Church each went 2-of-4 with one RBI.

Alvarez drops to 6-4 on the year with the loss.

Catcher Myles Parma was the only Trojan with multiple hits going 2-of-5, with one RBI for UALR.

Florida Atlantic will take on Miami in Coral Gables this Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. before concluding the regular season Sun Belt slate with a three game road swing against rival FIU beginning Friday.
