Re: SERIES THREAD: Cincinnati @ FAU - Feb 15-17, 2013

Game One

FINAL:

Cinn 2  FAU 9

Austin Gomber threw six innings, allowing two runs off four scattered hits, as Florida Atlantic (1-0) earned a 9-2 win over the Bearcats in game one of the weekend series on Saturday; which was originally scheduled for Friday night until rain forced a postponement.

Gomber averaged a strikeout per inning of action, as Cincinnati's only runs came off an Ian Happ homer in the top of the fourth, which plated 3B Devin Wenzel (2-for-4).

The Owls scored a pair of runs in both the first and third innings, before adding a solo effort in the bottom half of the fourth.

But their big turn came in the 6th, with LF Tyler Rocklein and RF Corey Keller (4-of-5, 3RBI) slapping consecutive doubles that were good for 2RBI apiece.

The Bearcats (0-1) used four members of its pitching staff in an effort to slow FAU, however sophomore RHP Mitch Patishall was the only one who came out unscathed.

Starter Christian McElroy lasted just three and a third innings for the Bearcats, surrendering five runs, three of which were earned, off eight hits.

The teams will meet again for game two at 3:15 PM on Saturday.

Game Two

FINAL:

Cinn 5  FAU 7

A five run fourth inning propelled Florida Atlantic to a 7-5 win of game two on Saturday.

Ten players found their way to the plate in the half frame. Ricky Santiago (photo, 2-for-4) drove in Corey Keller (2-for-4) for the first run before newcomer Levi Meyer (2-of-5) produced a 2RBI double, bringing his tally to four on the day. The Owls plated their remaining runs off a Cincinnati throwing error.

FAU drew first blood in the 1st inning courtesy of a Mark Nelson double that scored Nathan Pittman, who also doubled to lead off the inning.

Cincinnati (0-2) would answer with solo efforts in their next two turns to briefly take a 2-1 lead before Florida Atlantic (2-0) tied it up as Pittman's ground out to first base sent Geoff Jiminez (2-for-3) home after a lead off triple.

Starter Jake Meiers (W, 1-0) found himself in a bit of a jam by issuing a walk to load the bases in the top of the fourth, but was able to entice a fly out to right to end the side.

The Owls effectively put the game out of reach in their next trip, although the effort was complimented by a strong performance from the bullpen - aside from thee batters.

Freshman LHP Brandon Rhodes got the nod in the top of the 6th for his first collegiate game action and retired six straight hitters.

Coach John McCormack then went to RHP Bo Logan in the 8th, who also set down Cincinnati 1-2-3 before giving way to Greg Bennis.

Bennis issued back-to-back walks then surrendered a three run shot to left that added some drama to what appeared a done deal.

He was able to get one retired before Hugh Adams was tapped to close it out  for FAU (2-0) by securing the final two outs.

FAU outhit the Bearcats 11-6 for the game, and 25-11 on the afternoon.

Florida Atlantic will look to sweep Cincinnati for the second straight year tomorrow in game three. First pitch is slated for 12:00 PM.

Game Three

FINAL:

Cinn 3  FAU 4 (10)

Mike Spanos RBI single in the bottom of the 10th lifted the Owls (3-0) past the Bearcats on Sunday, while giving them their first series sweep of the 2013 season.

Corey Keller (2-of-4) was the benefactor, and crossed the plate three times on the afternoon.

FAU starter Jeremy Strewn threw six innings, allowing three runs off six hits before being relieved in solid fashion by Michael Sylvestri.

Sylvestri (W, 1-0) retired six straight Bearcats by way of strikeout in his first two frames, and gave up only one hit in his four innings of work.

Florida Atlantic led by a pair of runs after two, but the Bearcats clawed their way to a 3-2 advantage in the top of the third behind two Owl miscues and a two run homer from 3B Deven Wenzel.

Mitch Morales (2-for-4, 2RBI) drove in Keller for the second time to knot it up at three all before the offense went quiet for both squads.

With the game on the line, Keller led off the 10th with a triple the giving the Owls life with no outs. The next batter would be Spano, who delivered a single into right field for the winning run.

The Bearcats (0-3) issued nine walks on the afternoon, four of which came to a sharp eyed Nathan Pittman. FAU's staff was responsible for just one.

Miami will next visit FAU Baseball Stadium on Wednesday night at 6:30 PM.  The Hurricanes are currently 29th in the NCBWA Poll.
